Valeria Fernández’s Biography

Valeria Fernández is an award-winning filmmaker and versatile journalist. Fernández has covered the U.S.-Mexico borderlands as a correspondent for CNN Spanish and the Associated Press for close to a decade. She’s contributed to Pacific Standard, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Channel 4, Discovery Channel, PBS, Radio Bilingüe, PRI’s Global Nation and “The World.”
As a fellow for the International Center for Journalists she published stories in 2017 for PRI’s The World, and NPR’s Spanish podcast Radio Ambulante on human rights violations tied to the incarceration of Central-American youth in Mexico. In 2018, she was the inaugural recipient of the Heising-Simons Foundation Mosaic Award for freelance non-form narrative journalism covering underrepresented communities.
