Valeria Fernández is an award-winning filmmaker and versatile journalist. Fernández has covered the U.S.-Mexico borderlands as a correspondent for CNN Spanish and the Associated Press for close to a decade. She’s contributed to Pacific Standard, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Channel 4, Discovery Channel, PBS, Radio Bilingüe, PRI’s Global Nation and “The World.”

What was your first job as a journalist?

I started my career as a general assignment reporter for La Voz, a weekly newspaper out of Phoenix, Arizona. Before that I did book reviews.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. But before I did my mother used to typewrite the fiction stories I wrote by hand in a notebook.

How is social media changing news?

People are empowered to document abuse when it happens.
