ACCUSATIONS of prostitution and witchcraft followed the birth of Annah Sabau’s daughter — a stark contrast to the joy that usually surrounds the arrival of a new baby. Sabau had given birth to a child with a cleft lip. A cleft lip occurs when the upper lip does not join properly during a baby’s development in the womb. This results in a gap or split in the lip that can sometimes extend up to the nose.

EVIDENCE Chikwishe remembers the fear in her mother's eyes when she gave birth at just 15 years old. "I was advised that I needed to stay at the hospital's waiting mothers' shelter so that I could get timely check-ups and prepare for a safe delivery," says Chikwishe, now 33, from Chisavanye village in Chipinge. That advice saved her life and the lives of her six children. All her deliveries have been safe a remarkable feat given that she lives far from St Peter's Mission Hospital.

Chido Samanga BACK in 2001, when HIV was still discussed in hushed tones and stigma was high, a positive diagnosis was often the worst nightmare. It was usually met with denial, self-pity, and anger — especially toward partners accused of bringing the virus home. As a result, cases of domestic violence increased. But for Gogo Chido Samanga (62) of Hauna Phase 1 in Manicaland province, the news did not break her spirit.
