Effect of cultivar differences in seed size on early season growth and physiology of cotton under low and high‐temperature extremes
PAR photosynthetically active radiation PLS partial least squares PSI Photosystem I PSII Photosystem II SLW specific leaf weight 1 INTRODUCTION Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is the most widely cultivated species of cotton, accounting for approximately 97% of total global cotton production (Sanchez et al., 2019). However, cotton is known to have less vigorous seedling growth than many major row crops (Pilon et al., 2016).
Distinguishing High Daytime From Nighttime Temperature Effects During Early Vegetative Growth in Cotton
Early season vegetative growth of cotton exhibited differential responses to high daytime and nighttime temperatures. Increased leaf area mainly contributed to increased biomass production under high nighttime temperature. Increased nighttime respiration caused reductions in biomass due to combined high daytime and nighttime temperature. Decreased leaf area and net photosynthetic rate and increased nighttime respiration drove reductions in biomass under high daytime temperature alone.
Interactive effects of water deficit and nitrogen deficiency on photosynthesis, its underlying component processes, and carbon loss processes in cotton

Diffusional and Biochemical Limitations to Photosynthesis Under Water Deficit for Field‐Grown Cotton
1 INTRODUCTION Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is the dominant fiber crop in the world (Smith and Cothren 1999, Khadi et al. 2010). In 2023, 24.6 million tons of cotton were produced from 31.7 million ha globally (MacDonald et al. 2024). Plant-available water is one of the most limiting abiotic factors for cotton growth, development, and yield (Boyer 1982, Constable and Bange 2015).
