The evolution of fungus farming in ship-timber beetles (Coleoptera: Lymexyloidea)
INTRODUCTION Insects that feed on dead wood face a challenge, as wood has a low content of nutritional elements essential for insect growth (Filipiak & Weiner, 2014). Wood also has a low digestibility as it contains recalcitrant polymers such as lignin, and digesting it often requires the help of symbiotic microorganisms (Geib et al., 2008).
Protein–Protein Interactions Modulate a Key Branch Point in Monoterpene Indole Alkaloid Biosynthesis
Protein–protein interactions (PPIs) are crucial elements in biosynthetic pathways. Alongside gene clustering, gene fusion, enzyme colocalization, and metabolite sequestration, PPIs represent one way to direct metabolic flux (1,2) and limit promiscuous side reactions of intermediates.
A pseudoenzyme enables indole biosynthesis in eudicot plants - Nature Chemical Biology
Abstract Indole is an important biomolecule in plants, essential for amino acid biosynthesis, defense, pollinator attraction and plant–plant communication. Its biosynthesis is reported to be catalyzed by standalone indole-3-glycerol phosphate lyases, which are, however, absent in core eudicots. Here we show that, in core eudicots, indole production for defense and signaling occurs through an alternative pathway.
Ipecac alkaloid biosynthesis in two evolutionarily distant plants - Nature Chemical Biology
Abstract Ipecac alkaloids are medicinal monoterpenoid-derived tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids found in two distantly related plants: Carapichea ipecacuanha (Gentianales) and Alangium salviifolium (Cornales). Here we provide evidence suggesting that both plants initiate ipecac alkaloid biosynthesis through a nonenzymatic Pictet–Spengler reaction and we elucidate the biosynthetic fate of both the 1R and 1S stereoisomers that are produced in this nonstereoselective reaction.
Highjacked by a pseudoenzyme: How eudicot plants make indole
Abstract Indole is crucial for plant defense, where it is released as a signaling volatile upon herbivore attack and also serves as a starting precursor for defensive specialized metabolites. Indole is known to be synthesized in plants from indole-3-glycerol phosphate by the enzyme indole-3-glycerol phosphate lyase. Here we report that in core eudicots, indole production for plant defense occurs via an alternative pathway.
Bacteria modulate microalgal aging physiology through the induction of extracellular vesicle production to remove harmful metabolites - Nature Microbiology
Abstract The bloom and bust patterns of microalgae in aquatic systems contribute massively to global biogeochemical cycles. The decline of algal blooms is mainly caused by nutrient limitation resulting in cell death, the arrest of cell division and the aging of surviving cells. Nutrient intake can re-initiate proliferation, but the processes involved are poorly understood. Here we characterize how the bloom-forming diatom Coscinodiscus radiatus recovers from starvation after nutrient influx.
Ring-shaped odor coding in the antennal lobe of migratory locusts
Highlights • A transgenic line was established to express GCaMP6s in olfactory sensory neurons • Calcium imaging reveals a functionally ring-shaped odor code of glomerular clusters • Distinct ring regions encode chemical identity and ecological significance • The ring-shaped odor-coding pattern occurs consistently throughout development Summary The representation of odors in the locust antennal lobe with its >2,000 glomeruli has long remained a perplexing puzzle.
How frequently are insects wounded in the wild? A case study using Drosophila melanogaster
Abstract Wounding occurs across multicellular organisms. There is a deep understanding of infections and immune responses from lab studies, yet wounds remain relatively comparatively understudied in nature. Ecological interactions like predator attacks, intra- and inter-specific competition can lead to wounding. Furthermore, rates of wounding may vary depending on factors such as sex and geographic location, with consequences for host mobility, reproduction, and susceptibility to pathogens.
Experience-dependent plasticity of a highly specific olfactory circuit in Drosophila melanogaster

Author Correction: The oomycete Lagenisma coscinodisci hijacks host alkaloid synthesis during infection of a marine diatom
Correction to: Nature Communications https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-12908-w, published online 30 October 2019. The original version of this article contained an error in the chemical nomenclature of compound 4-CTC in the abstract and the results section, which incorrectly read ‘4-carboxy-2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-β-carboline’. The correct name for compound 4-CTC according to IUPAC nomenclature is ‘2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-β-carboline-3-carboxylic acid’.
