One of the greatest injustices facing Kenya today is not only corruption itself, but the message it sends to millions of young people: that hard work does not pay. A quick random sample of feedback from boda boda riders would quickly entrench this narrative that hard-work in Kenya doesn’t pay, given that many the riders are either overqualified individuals with tertiary education papers, high school dropouts or with only an O-level high school certificate.

The old tactics have been used post-Independence, during multipartyism and over the years by leaders, some now long gone. Politics has now evolved, and so too must the art of campaigning.

Over the years traditional media in Kenya and Africa in general has taken the front seat in fuelling collective panic and pessimism. Traditional media has also played a big role in informing, educating and communicating a lot of issues, but the content is more geared towards creating panic, with the key denominator being negative news. How is that? Just this week I contemplated on how with the current political regime, there are fewer power outages, at least where I stay.
