More divorcing couples are turning to the courts to resolve financial disputes, amid growing concern over long-term financial security and the rising cost of living. Recent Ministry of Justice figures show applications for financial remedy orders reached their highest level in 15 years during 2025, despite overall divorce numbers falling. The figures show there were 49,067 applications for a financial remedy in the family courts in 2025, the highest since 2010 when 51,681 applications were made.

In many cases, family members can bring a claim after a loved one dies from an asbestos-related illness. This is usually done by the deceased’s estate or dependants and can provide compensation for financial losses, care costs, and the impact of the illness and death, even if no claim was started before they passed away.
