What was your first job as a journalist?

I created, produced & hosted "The Looseleaf Report," a talk/variety TV show that aired in LA & NY. It was my first gig as a journalist.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means getting the truth out to the world. In my case - being a critic - also means getting paid for my professional opinion.

Email and/or phone.

My brain, my Mac and my fingers!

Why did you become a journalist?

I am innately curious, I love asking questions and I love writing.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

There've been so many, but I loved covering the Dalai Lama, writing Leo DiCaprio's bio & schmoozing with Plácido Domingo for La Opinión.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't use SpellCheck!

When's the best time to pitch you?

Day or night!

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Covering the world premiere of Ballet Preljocaj in Aix-En-Provence; covering the Verdi Festival in Parma, Italy; to cover Abu Dhabi Festival.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Asking me to play the concert harp in Guam and write about it.

What's your favorite drink?

Single malt scotch!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the theater covering something!

The New Yorker
