At Philadelphia-area medical schools responsible for training one in six of the nation’s doctors, the top leadership oftenlooks nothing like the diversity of their majority-minority city. Thomas Jefferson University will soon be the only school with a top leader from a racial group underrepresented in medicine. Jefferson on Tuesday named Said A. Ibrahim, an internal medicine physician born in Somalia, as the first Black dean of its Sidney Kimmel Medical College. He starts on Dec. 1.

More gay and bisexual individuals will be able to donate blood in Philadelphia beginning Aug. 7, when the Red Cross — the nation’s largest supplier of blood — implements new rules for donor eligibility that focus on behavior rather than sexual orientation. The Food and Drug Administration in May eased restrictions intended to protect against HIV that prevented men who have sex with men from donating blood unless they abstained from sex for three months.
