There’s a question I’m asked fairly often in the clinic—usually by someone who has just discovered a family history of liver disease. “If it runs in my family, is it inevitable?” The short answer is no. Genetics may set the stage, but they don’t always determine the outcome. There is no single gene that determines disease risk; it is usually a combination of genes, and when they interact with a conducive environment, the risk becomes more significant.
