In the face of the climate emergency, “nature-based solutions” represent a promising and relatively simple mitigation solution. Coined in 2008, this term refers to “actions to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural and modified ecosystems to effectively address societal challenges and provide benefits for humanity and biodiversity1.” These solutions aim to promote carbon storage in soils or biomass or to avoid emissions, for example by limiting deforestation.

Face à l’urgence climatique, les « solutions fondées sur la nature » représentent des solutions d’atténuation prometteuses et relativement simples. Inventé en 2008, ce terme désigne « des actions de protection, de gestion durable et de restauration des écosystèmes naturels et modifiés de façon à relever les défis sociétaux de manière efficace et adaptative, afin d’assurer le bien-être de l’humanité et des bénéfices pour la biodiversité1 ».

According to a predictive model developed by a CNRS researcher1 and his European colleagues, the microalgae present in peat bogs could offset up to 14% of future CO2 emissions, thanks to their photosynthetic activity2 . This conclusion was reached by basing the work on in situ experiments and the various predictive scenarios established by the IPCC. It is the first model to quantify the potential compensation of future CO2 emissions by peatlands on a global scale.
