Updated / Wednesday, 24 Jun 2026 15:40 Jeffrey Donaldson was convicted of 18 sex offences on Monday Jeffrey Donaldson has asked for his British royal knighthood to be renounced following his convicition for rape and 17 other sexual offences. The former DUP leader has also tendered his resignation from the Privy Council, which provides confidential counsel to the monarch, with immediate effect. The moves were confirmed in a statement issued by his solicitor John McBurney.

Jeffrey Donaldson's defence during his trial was essentially that he was the victim of a conspiracy, that he was a man of virtue being hounded by liars. But the jury of seven men and five women at Newry Crown Court concluded that he was the liar, and therefore a rapist and sex offender.
