I've learned a lot from movies. Or have I? So much of it isn't what it seems. Hollywood makes everything look easy and fast. Unfortunately, life doesn't work that way. It's really disappointing! Global travel is "easy-peasy." In "The Da Vinci Code," Tom Hanks goes all over Europe, and it's always daytime. In "Taken," Liam Neeson flies to Paris and doesn't even look tired. When I fly that far, it makes my back hurt, goofs up my sleep schedule and ... what day is it?
Who's your favorite?
This past weekend I let my geekiness show and went to see The Fantastic Four. The reviews were not stellar, but I thought it was fun. There's just something about superheroes that grabs us, no matter how many times we've seen the story. A person in a mask, cape blowing in the wind, stepping up to face impossible odds. It always works on us. Sure, part of it is the cool fight scenes, the explosions, the rooftop showdowns, (I love those!) but it's more than that.

By VINNIE SORCE, Courier Columnist We like to think we'd never fall for a scam. But unfortunately, scammers are good at what they do, and they've been at it for centuries. The technology has changed, but the goal has always been the same: to trick people into handing over their money, information or trust. Some scams feel new, but many are just newer versions of the same old cons that have worked for generations.
Unhoused, not invisible
My wife and I saw the comedian Gabriel Iglesias when he was in town last fall. Ten minutes into his show, he made a joke about homeless people now being referred to as unhoused. His lack of compassion and empathy was repugnant, but the really disturbing part was when the audience of 5000 cheered, seemingly having no concept of stigma and its harms. There are approximately 150 million unhoused people around the world.
Everyday inventions
I had a therapist tell me once to list five things I was grateful for every day. I listed my wife, children, job, home and enough food. I imagine this, or similar, to be on many people's lists. She told me one of the things she was grateful for was indoor plumbing. I said I was grateful for my car starting. That got me thinking of all the inventions we take for granted every day from plumbing to car parts. Not the big ones like the wheel or computer.

When I was in high school, I was pretty shy. I was ok in band because there were a lot of other students, and we performed as a group. I was never singled out. New people and speaking in front of a group were always riddled with anxiety. My freshman year, I decided to work on the crew of the fall drama and then the spring musical. It was fun, and I did it for the next three years. Most of the people involved were band and choir members, so no new acceptance was needed.
Animal statistics
I'm not much of a pet person. Not because I don't like animals, because I don't want the responsibility. I'd like to come home from work on Friday afternoon and say to my wife, "Let's go to Vegas," and get up and just go with no pet anchor weighing us down. In reality, my wife has, and I just live with, two dogs. Bailey is a 12-year-old Basset Hound, and Milo is a 3-year-old mixed breed. I think of them like grandchildren.
Life is short, Death is long
Death is a very personal experience, and people grieve in different ways. There is no right way to grieve. Depending on your source, it is said that there are either 5 or 7 stages of grief. I've not felt them all, and it is certainly not a blueprint of what people will experience. My first wife, Lisa, was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 1996. Our boys were 5 and 3 at the time.

Weirdly enough, only about 170,000 of these words are currently in use. Stringing these words together forming endless sentences is what connects us to each other.
Have you made anything lately?
I am currently taking a ceramics class at Yavapai College. I also took the corresponding course last semester. Before I started the course I imagined sitting at a potter's wheel creating perfect mugs, bowls, vases and pots. Easy peasy. I was in for quite the surprise. The first semester touched on throwing for only three classes. I knew in the back of my mind that clay could be used in other ways, but I had never considered how many things it could be used for.

I was a "nerd" as a kid. I wore glasses since second grade, wasn't at all good at sports (I was completely uncoordinated, as I still am), and liked and was good at school, plus I was always the teacher's pet. I was bullied relentlessly from first grade through eighth grade. Back then it was "Boys will be boys," "Man up!" and "Stop being a sissy." I had nowhere to go, except the library of course. That changed in high school. I was still clumsy and liked school, etc. but now I had a place to go.
Hate is too great a burden to bear
By VINNIE SORCE, Courier Columnist It has been said, "Hating people is like burning down your own house to get rid of a rat." The amount of hatred among people has grown to a head. I see it everywhere in the current environment. We are supposed to be a nation indivisible, and we are currently at war with each other without the actual war. The last time we were so divided was the Civil War.
Reading is fundamental
By VINNIE SORCE, Courier Columnist To open a book is to open a doorway into the universe. Reading is a big part of my life. I am a bibliophage, which is an ardent reader of books. I am also a bibliophile which means I love the books themselves and I do love to collect them. I have a small collection of antique books which I'm always trying to add to. I also have a larger collection of mostly fiction, numbering over 200.
A wonderful human being
We lost a great man recently. Regardless of your politics Jimmy Carter was a beautiful human being. James Earl Carter Jr. was born in 1924 in Plains, Georgia. Living to 100 years old, his life was well lived. Jimmy Carter was the first president born in a hospital. He was in the Navy assigned to the submarines USS Pomfret (SS 391) and the USS K-1 (SSK 1) from 1946 to 1953.
Just for the art of it all
I enjoy art. I belong to several Facebook groups that are art-related, and have been lucky enough to have visited some wonderful museums. Let's not focus only on paintings or sculptures; art can be almost anything including music, dance, pottery and, of course, writing. Art in all forms has been around for tens of thousands of years. The first cave painting was discovered on an Indonesian Island, and is estimated to have been created 35,000 to 51,000 years ago.
There are more 'national days' than ever
Every day seems to be a national day for something. National Donut Day is June 6 and Nov. 5. I can definitely get behind those days! It's so special it got two days. Oct. 20 is the National Day on Writing, celebrating writing in all forms. July 4, 1776, is said to be the oldest National day. New National Days normally need an act of Congress to be official. As early as 1919 Hallmark declared National Friendship Day to boost sales.

I have a Facebook account which I am active on. I have Instagram, LinkedIn and X (Twitter) accounts which I don't really use, maybe I check a couple of times a year. I started on Facebook when it first came out because of a book group I wanted to join which was on the platform. I had never heard of it before. I used Twitter a lot for my book promotion. I amassed over 1,000 followers. Most were other writers looking to be followed back to grow their numbers.
Community needs to get involved in drug-abuse prevention
My full time job is education and public relations specialist at MatForce. What is MatForce you ask? Our website describes us as, "Our goal is to empower communities across Arizona to prevent and reduce substance use and to engage and equip their citizens to build healthier, safer places where children, families, and community members can thrive." (matforce.org) Basically, a bulk of what we do is teach and engage the public in drug education and prevention. I do two things.
The challenges of writing
Writing is not an easy thing. A blank page is quite intimidating even if you have a subject or story in mind. I can sit down at my computer and start writing off the top of my head. I can get a great opening paragraph or even a first chapter without thinking about it, but there is a problem with that. I suggest ideas to my sons all the time, the oldest being a screen writer. They say, "Yeah, good idea but what happens next?" That's where I fall apart.
Music has made lifetime of memories
By VINNIE SORCE, Courier Columinst Music can move your soul. Music can trigger memories. Music can make you dance! I dance like a drunk beheaded chicken. I loved my parent's music when I was a kid. I would sing along to the Beetles or Chubby Checker. I would yell out "Tequilla!" not knowing what it was. My tastes were limited to my parent's radio stations at that point.
