Bioactive enhanced adjuvant chemokine oligonucleotide nanoparticles (BEACONs) for mucosal vaccination against genital herpes
Editor’s summary Abstract INTRODUCTION RESULTS DISCUSSION MATERIALS AND METHODS Acknowledgments Supplementary Materials REFERENCES AND NOTES Information & Authors Metrics & Citations View Options References Figures Tables Media Share Editor’s summary No vaccine currently exists for genital herpes, caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), in part because of the challenge of triggering localized immune responses in the reproductive tract mucosa. Trained immunity in skin infections: Macrophages and beyond
Epithelial stem cells (EpSCs) in the basal layer of the epithelium are self-renewing cells maintaining the epithelial tissues of the skin, the gastrointestinal lining, and the respiratory tract (Blanpain et al., 2004). Naik et al. found that skin inflammation induces long-lasting memory in EpSCs, enabling faster wound closure upon subsequent injury. This process relies on AIM2, as Aim2-deficient mice show impaired wound healing post-inflammation (Naik et al., 2017).
Sensory neurons shape local macrophage identity via TGF-β signaling

Keywords macrophages skin dermis sensory neurons nociceptors TGF-β neuro-immune interactions origin CGRP regeneration Introduction The skin acts as a protective barrier to the environment, with macrophages representing the most abundant resident immune cell type. Macrophages play important roles in tissue homeostasis and barrier defense. They adapt to various microenvironments and consequently display substantial variations in immunophenotype, morphology, transcriptome, and function.

Dynamic role of monocytes and meningeal macrophages in bacterial meningoencephalitis
Abstract Macrophages in the dura mater are substantial contributors to the immune defense of the brain, however, their site-specific origin and function in bacterial infections of the central nervous system are incompletely understood. In a natural model of streptococcal meningoencephalitis, where bacteria systemically spread via the bloodstream to the brain, we found streptococci to be largely restricted in the meninges.
Macrophages Are a Potent Source of Streptococcus-Induced IFN-β
Reinhild Feuerstein, Vitka Gres, Núria Elias Perdigó, Sebastian Baasch, Mirjam Freudenhammer, Roland Elling and Philipp Henneke J Immunol December 15, 2019, 203 (12) 3416-3426; DOI: https://doi.org/10.4049/jimmunol.1900542 Key Points Bone marrow GM-CSF culture gives rise to four distinct populations. GM-CSF MΦ can produce IFN-β. GBS-stimulated GM-CSF MΦ have the ability to adapt their phenotype to be more DC like.
