Veteran retailer, sales rep Vincent McEwan passes at 77
BOSTON METRO WEST — Vincent “Vinny” James McEwan, a veteran of the home furnishings industry, passed away on Aug. 5 at the age of 77. Throughout a successful career spanning over 40 years, McEwan spent many years at Rotmans Furniture and then Cabot House, serving as the general manager. He also held outside furniture representative positions for Drexel Heritage, Charleston Forge and King Hickory, as well as a position as the Boston area as regional manager for La-Z-Boy.
Furniture, mattress companies part of rent-to-own industry donation to Florida nonprofits
AUSTIN, Texas – Following RTO World 2026, the national conference and trade show for the rent-to-own industry, 12 exhibitors donated more than $81,000 in furniture, mattresses, appliances and home goods displayed during the event to nonprofit organizations serving youth and young adults in Palm Beach County, Fla. The Assn. of Professional Rental Organizations (APRO) coordinated the donations following the Aug. 24-27 conference in West Palm Beach.

It’s one month away: Furniture Safety Week slated for Oct. 5-10
HIGH POINT – The American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA) has set the third annual National Furniture Safety Week for Oct. 5-10. The public awareness campaign is designed to engage all segments of the home furnishings industry in promoting consumer awareness of common home safety issues. Companies that have not yet signed up to participate can still join the nationwide effort by pledging their support and agreeing to help promote the campaign’s safety messages.

HIGH POINT — WithIt, the women’s leadership development network for the home and furnishings industry, has named 17 recipients of academic scholarships awarded through the WithIt Scholarship Foundation. In total, the WithIt Scholarship Foundation is distributing $31,500 in scholarship funds this year. The nonprofit foundation received $50,000 from the HHG Charitable Trust and an additional donation from the Boardman Family Foundation to assist with the distribution of scholarship funds.

La-Z-Boy’s retail momentum offset by wholesale numbers in Q1
MONROE, Mich. — La-Z-Boy Inc., a retailer and manufacturer of residential furniture, reported increases in retail written and delivered sales for its first quarter of fiscal 2027, ended July 25. Retail written sales were up 16% and retail delivered sales were up 10% for the period, while total sales for the company came in at $476 million, down 3% against the first quarter last year and down 1% excluding the impact of wholesale case goods divestiture, which was completed in May.
