The Hosts of Black Labor
American industry is slowly beginning to awake to the fact that there is in this country a great reservoir of labor which has been only partially tapped. The South has nine million black folk — of whom five million are productive workers. As a mass they are ignorant and unskilled, but they are ambitious, willlng to learn, and for the most part at present wretchedly underpaid. Lynching, lawlessness, lack of schools, and disfranchisement have slowly but surely made them ripe for change.
The Beginning or the End of America
During Black History Month we share a letter written by James Baldwin, one of the foremost novelists and public intellectuals of the 20 th century. In 1970 Baldwin wrote an open letter to the then imprisoned Communist Party activist Angela Davis expressing his solidarity, and reflecting on racism and Black radicalism in America. This letter, reproduced below, also features in If They Come in the Morning… , a collection of classic writings on race edited by Angela Davis.
Suffering Suffragettes
This article originally appeared in the June 1912 issue of The Crisis, a journal considered one of the leading forces in the New Negro Movement and the Harlem Renaissance, addressing a failure on the part of the National American Woman Suffrage Association to support a resolution condemning the Southern disenfranchisement of African Americans, in law and in practice. Du Bois, a leading black intellectual of the day, was editor of The Crisis.

On Being Black | New Republic
“There you go, again. You know that I—” I arise at seven. The milkman has neglected me. He pays little attention to colored districts. My white neighbor glares elaborately. I walk softly, lest I disturb him. The children jeer as I pass to work. The women in the street car withdraw their skirts of prefer to stand. The policeman is truculent. The elevator man hates to serve Negroes. My job is insecure because the white union wants it and does not want me. I try to lunch, but no place near will serve me.
Can we appreciate the redeemed among us?
In 1957, W.E.B. Du Bois, civil rights activist and founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, asked, what shall honesty do in the face of deception? For several days now, some of us in West Kensington have felt as tired as Jacob must have felt the morning after he had an all-night wrestling match with what we think was an angel (Genesis 32:22-31).
How the fight to censor D.W. Griffith’s film shaped American history.
The pamphlet’s author was the film director D.W. Griffith, and the subtext for his First Amendment flag-waving was the fierce campaign against his 1915 motion picture The Birth of a Nation. The longest and most expensive movie yet produced was an unprecedented box office phenomenon: Griffith biographer Richard Schickel estimates that by the end of 1917 it would gross $60 million, an unheard-of sum.

I believe that democracy has so far disappeared in the United States that no “two evils” exist. There is but one evil party with two names, and it will be elected despite all I can do or say. There is no third party.
