Write your own review! Anthony_Conty So Sad When You Recognize the Characters' Regrets I often make a big deal about how the flap summary reveals too much. I didn't read anything to preview “The River Is Waiting” by Wally Lamb, and that was the right decision. Lamb produces a study in guilt, loss, and redemption that you need to read to believe. You will feel bad for the narrator despite his flaws.

Review: Tragedies pile up in Wally Lamb’s new novel, but will readers care?
The worst possible thing has happened to Corby Ledbetter, and he has only himself to blame. No spoilers but the tragedy is such, in Wally Lamb‘s “The River Is Waiting,” that Corby will forever be wracked by whether he can be forgiven — by himself, his wife, his small daughter or the rest of his family. The court, however, is not in a forgiving mood. He is sentenced to three years behind bars to ponder what he has done. kAmr@C3J’D 72E6 :D?’E 6?E:C6=J F?6IA64E65] w6 H2D 5CF?< 2?5 @? pE:G2?

Exclusive: Wally Lamb Opens Up About His Own History of Alcoholism and His Son's Incarceration
Wally Lamb became a father and a writer simultaneously. He began working on his first book in 1981, the year his first son was born. He began writing his most recent novel, The River is Waiting, between shifts caring for his newborn granddaughter.
Wally Lamb mines grief & guilt in 'The River is Waiting'
Corby Ledbetter is in trouble. In Wally Lamb’s new novel, “The River Is Waiting,” Corby has lost his job as a commercial artist and has developed a secret addiction to alcohol and pills, setting him on a dangerous path that leads to an unfathomable tragedy. Corby starts staying at home during the day with his twin toddlers — one boy and one girl — while his wife works as the family’s sole breadwinner.
The River Is Waiting
In Wally Lamb’s emotional and page-turning sixth novel, THE RIVER IS WAITING, we are introduced to Corby Ledbetter, a 35-year-old father of twins Maisie and Niko. Corby’s wife is getting ready for work upstairs, and he is making breakfast, listening to his children babble in their cribs. Then an unimaginable tragedy occurs, one that could have been prevented had Corby not been under the influence of his morning rum and Ativan. Corby accepts responsibility for this horrific incident.

5 dark tales hit shelves this week
Murder, manslaughter, addiction, prison, retribution, death: This week's handful of publishing highlights is indeed quite a handful - and an effective treatment for anyone suffering from too much sunshine and warmth and lightheartedness as we hurtle toward the summer solstice. Great Black Hope, by Rob Franklin Paradoxically, sometimes all it takes to make your day a little brighter is to remind yourself just how dark life can get.
The River Is Waiting
From Wally Lamb, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of two Oprah Book Club picks --- SHE'S COME UNDONE and I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE --- comes the propulsive story of a young father who, after an unbearable tragedy, reckons with the possibility of atonement for the unforgivable. Corby Ledbetter is struggling. New fatherhood, the loss of his job, and a growing secret addiction have thrown his marriage to his beloved Emily into a tailspin.

At Thanksgiving a few years back, a fed-up Rhys punched his conspiracy-theorist son-in-law in the mouth, chucked his smartphone out a car window and fled for a cabin in the woods, with no one around except a pack of hungry raccoons. Now Kinnick's old life is about to land right back on his crumbling doorstep.

Summary and Reviews of The River Is Waiting by Wally Lamb
Chapter One April 27, 2017 It's six a.m. and I'm the first one up. Spotify's playing that Chainsmokers song I like. If we go down, then we go down together… I take an Ativan and chase my morning coffee with a couple of splashes of hundred-proof Captain Morgan. I return the bottle to its hiding place inside the twenty-quart lobster pot we never use, put the lid on, and put it back in the cabinet above the fridge that Emily can't reach without the step stool.

I didn't read anything to preview “The River Is Waiting” by Wally Lamb, and that was the right decision. Lamb produces a study in guilt, loss, and redemption that you need to read to believe. You will feel bad for the narrator despite his flaws. So, if you made one of the biggest mistakes of your life because of one of your darkest secrets, you would struggle with inner turmoil.
The River Is Waiting Reading Guide & Discussion Questions
Book Club Discussion Questions Print PDF For supplemental discussion material see our Beyond the Book article, The Evolution of Alcoholics Anonymous and our BookBrowse Review of The River Is Waiting. Please be aware that this discussion guide will contain spoilers! Corby is a deeply flawed yet sympathetic character. Does his character challenge your preconceived notions about morality and empathy, particularly within the context of his life decisions? How does he evolve throughout the novel?
THE RIVER IS WAITING
This sometimes-gripping, sometimes-labored story of grief, guilt, and healing is uneven, like the recovery it chronicles. “Can a man who caused the death of his child ever atone enough to be forgiven?” That is the central question raised by Lamb’s novel of every parent’s worst nightmare. That nightmare becomes a reality for unemployed commercial artist Corby Ledbetter, who cares for toddler twins Maisie and Niko while his wife, Emily, works.

If You've Never Read Anything By Wally Lamb, Here's The Book You Should Start With
Laura Cavanaugh/Getty Images By Sheri Radford/Aug. 26, 2022 11:45 am EDT In 1981, Wally Lamb was working as a high school English teacher in Connecticut when he started writing fiction. "I didn't really have a lonely childhood so much as I had a solitary childhood, but when you're cast in the role of the observer as a kid, if you're going to become a fiction writer, that's probably not a bad thing to have happen," he told the CT Examiner.
