I have been working in education for a long time and have been through the many changes that inevitably come with time. For community colleges, change is constant as we strive to meet the ever-changing needs of students and the community. Change is good and is usually an indicator of progress. Change can also be exhausting. You have likely felt it yourself and seen it in the team that you lead.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Commencement season is upon us, and I will admit that it was always one of my favorite events on campus. Graduation was an annual reminder of the collective efforts of faculty, staff, trustees and administrators to support student success. Like your graduates, I hope that you are taking the time to celebrate success. Too often, we simply move on to the next task.

I often talk to new community college presidents about the need to be nimble and dexterous when it comes to leadership. Indeed, being able to respond quickly and effectively is an important skill that will be often tested throughout your career. It’s not just about being responsive, it is also about being seen as responsive and in command of a situation.
