1 Introduction With the increasing total energy demand and the declining reserves of conventional fossil fuels, natural gas hydrate (NGH) has gained growing attention as a low-carbon unconventional energy source and is regarded as the most promising alternative energy resource for the 21st century [1]. Since the 1970s, NGH has been identified in or is potentially present in over 200 regions worldwide, more than 95% of which are located in marine sediments.
