1 INTRODUCTION In 2019–2020, 608,416 people were living with alcohol dependence in England [1]; of those engaged in treatment, 13,349 people received pharmacological interventions, mainly to facilitate withdrawal from alcohol [2]. Alcohol withdrawal is a medical emergency associated with lengthy hospital stays and an increased frequency of alcohol-related hospital admissions.
