Wayne Larrivee's NFL Wild Card scouting report at-a-glance
Saturday AFC: No 5. seed Tennessee Titans at No. 4 Kansas City Chiefs (3:35 CT) This is the first postseason for quarterback Marcus Mariota, and Arrowhead Stadium is not an easy place for a visitor to make his debut. However, the Chiefs - after getting off to a 5-0 start - went through a long midseason swoon before taking over what turned out to be a relatively weak AFC West.
Wayne Larrivee's postseason NFL power poll: Packers make prohibitive drop
When you compare the preseason predictions for an NFL campaign with the results at the end of the season ,you find out just how “smart you aren’t!”Additionally, this exercise illustrates the sheer volatility of an NFL season where unexpected good or poor play and the plague of injuries more than any other factors dictate the success or failure of any team. How volatile? In the NFC no defending division champion from 2016 retained its division title.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Vikings Scouting Report II: When the Vikings have the ball
NOTE: In total, this game is really unusual for the Packers. Since they have been eliminated from the playoffs, how they play their personnel will is not the same as if they were still in the post season hunt. That being said, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is on IR, WR Devonte Adams in concussion protocall, outside linebackers Clay Matthews and Nick Perry have not practiced all week with their medical situations same for RG Jahri Evans.

Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Vikings Scouting Report I: Inside the matchup
The Green Bay Packers have been placed this week as a nine-point underdog against the Vikings. The last time that happened: December 1988 at Lambeau Field, also in the second-to-last game of the regular season, also against Minnesota. Green Bay was a 10.5 point dog and the Packers prevailed on a 14-degree day, 18-6 behind quarterback Randy Wright! (Listen to our conversation about that game above.) From 1986-1992, the Vikings were favored in Green Bay 6 of 7 games.
Wayne Larrivee's Week 16 NFL power poll: Packers fall as they lose postseason destiny
The NFL postseason landscape has taken shape, and for the first time in eight seasons, it does not include the Green Bay Packers. The New England Patriots will extend the NFL’s longest continuous playoff run to nine seasons. The Eagles and Vikings have emerged as NFC powers, and the NFC South is unquestionably football’s best division with three of its four members on the verge of the post season. Perhaps the biggest surprises of this season are the Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Family of Lombardi-era WTMJ Packers voice Ted Moore needs your help
The late Ted Moore was the iconic voice of the Lombardi Green Bay Packers through the dynasty years of the 1960's. Tragedy has led his son’s family to need our help.If you never heard Ted live on WTMJ, you have more than likely heard him call Bart Starr’s one-yard touchdown sneak into the south end zone fifty years ago this month. When you see it on television or on NFL Films productions, his is the voice you hear. It was December 31st, 1967.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Browns Scouting Report III: When Green Bay has the ball
Last week the Packers garnered a season high 199 rushing yards against Tampa Bay!Since the Minnesota game when quarterback Aaron Rodgers went down on the second offensive series, the Packers have become a little more run-oriented team. In the past seven games (including Minnesota), the Packers have rushed 180 times for 845 yards (a 4.7 average) and 8 TD's. Green Bay is averaging 120.7 yards rushing per game! But if there is one thing the Cleveland Browns do well it is stop the run.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Browns Scouting Report II: When the Browns have the ball
The biggest problem for the Packers in this game will be covering Cleveland’s suddenly formidable core of wide receivers.Josh Gordon is one of the most gifted receivers in the game today! Gordon returned last week at the Los Angeles Chargers (4 receptions in 11 targets for 85 yards) from a two-year absence due to suspension. He has had all kinds of off field issues and spent most of the past two years in rehab.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Browns Scouting Report I: Inside the matchup
About the Browns (0-12):Cleveland is coming in off a 19-10 loss to the Chargers in Los Angeles. They have lost 4 games by three points or less this season. Since the revival of NFL football on the shores of Lake Erie in 1999, the Browns have consistently been in the outhouse of the league.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Buccaneers Scouting Report I: Inside the matchup
About the Buccaneers: Tampa Bay (4-7) was one of my teams to take the next step into the post season. Injuries, have taken two good squads and left them on the outer periphery of the NFC playoffs. The Bucs especially, and the Packers, have a tough road to make January football. The Buccaneers are coming off a 34-20 loss at Atlanta snapping a two game winning streak.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Buccaneers Scouting Report II: When Tampa Bay has the ball
The numbers behind the Buccaneers this year: 20.3 points per game (23rd), 345.5 yards (14th), 81.1 rushing (28th), 264.5 passing (3rd). Yes, Tampa Bay is number three in the league in passing yards per game! That is with backup Ryan Fitzpatrick running the show the past three weeks. Jameis Winston has posted fairly pedestrian numbers especially when it comes to passer rating (84.2 as a rookie, 86.1 last year and 87.3 this season).
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Buccaneers Scouting Report III: When Green Bay has the ball
What the numbers show for the Packers: 21.1 points per game (19th), 308.6 yards (25th), 100.4 rushing (22nd) and 208.3 passing (20th). Quarterback Brett Hundley really came up big in Pittsburgh, and the Packers very nearly pulled off an upset as a 14 point underdog. Hundley’s overall numbers were good (passer rating of 134.3 with three touchdown passes and no interceptions), but what was most impressive was his performance on one fourth quarter drive.
Wayne's Week 13 NFL Power Poll: Packers gain respect, but not a big climb after Sunday's loss
Everyone talks about playing meaningful football in December. For the Green Bay Packers more often than not, December is meaningful. This season, if the Packers resided in the AFC, there is no question at 5-6 they’d be right in the thick of the playoff race. If the playoffs began today, and they don’t, it would take a 6-5 record to qualify in the AFC. Yes, the Pack would be on the outside looking in, but they’d be just one game out of the six and final playoff spot.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Ravens Scouting Report I: About the matchup
The SeriesThis is only the sixth meeting between these two franchises, with the Green Bay Packers having won four of the previous five games. The last meeting came in October of 2013 with the Packers upsetting the Ravens 19-17. The only Ravens win came in 2005, Mike Sherman’s forgettable last season, 48-3 on Monday night football.About the Ravens (4-5)Coming off a bye week, they are losers of five of their last seven games. After a 2-0 start, they have struggled offensively.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Ravens Scouting Report II: When Baltimore has the ball
Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco vs. Green Bay defense Flacco went into this season with the highest salary cap hit in the NFL! His career record is 87-60, but he isn't even in the top 10 in NFL passer rating this year. You can see why, despite his Super Bowl run in 2012, that while he is being paid like a franchise quarterback, he isn’t one! Recently injuries have taken a toll. A knee took him out in 2015, and more recently he missed all of the preseason with a neck injury.
Wayne Larrivee's Week 11 NFL Power Poll: Packers make big jump after win in Chicago
There is very little change in this week’s top ten as the NFL finally settles in. The good teams are setting themselves apart from the bad and those maimed by injuries. We thought the Jets and Bills might be better than we thought; what we have found in the last couple of weeks is they are not.The Jaguars, Eagles, Saints and Rams are the surprise contenders this season and they apparently are for real.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bears scouting report I: Inside the matchup
Sunday brings the 196th renewal of the NFL’s oldest rivalry. The Packers lead 95-94-6, including two playoff games. On September 28th, the Packers beat the Bears 35-14 in Green Bay. The Packers have won 3 consecutive games over the Bears, outscoring them 91-51. The Packers have won 15 of 18 matchups in the Aaron Rodgers era and seven of the last eight since Week 17 of the 2013 season. Green Bay has six straight wins at Soldier Field.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bears scouting report III: When Green Bay has the ball
This is what the Packers are up against offensively with the loss of Aaron Rodgers: - Their first five games: A 4-1 record, 27.4 points per game, 22.4 points against, +4 in turnovers. The Packers offense scored on 42 percent of their drives with Rodgers. - Their last three games: An 0-3 record, 14.6 points per game, 26.3 points against, +1 in turnovers. They have scored on only 25.6 percent of their drives with Brett Hundley.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bears scouting report II: When Chicago has the ball
Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and the Chicago passing game Like the Packers, the Bears have a young inexperienced quarterback; they’re averaging just 16.8 points per game and have scored just one touchdown in their last 27 offensive possessions. Trubisky is 2-2 as the starter and completed 12 combined passes in the two victories, but Trubisky’s superior mobility and decision-making over Mike Glennon’s has made Coach John Fox’s choice to elevate the rookie in Week 5 look like a no-brainer.
Wayne Larrivee: Packers struggling because they are missing transcendence in Aaron Rodgers
Listen to Wayne's latest Play-by-Play podcast below, and also check out Wayne's chat with Steve Scaffidi from Tuesday's Monday Morning Quarterbacks at the end of Wayne's blog. I have always believed there is not as much difference in the talent level of the best NFL teams from the worst, at least not as much as records would indicate. With a draft, hard salary cap and free agency, the talent is pretty evenly distributed across the 32 teams.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Lions Scouting Report IV: Special teams and Wayne's keys
Special teams: Green Bay punt coverage vs. Detroit's Jamal Agnew and their punt return unit The Packers punt coverage has been very good all season, as opponents have average a miniscule 3.8 yards per punt return. Justin Vogel has helped set up that fine coverage, averaging 46 yards per punt with a 44.5 net average. He gets excellent height on his punts and has been adept at placing the ball. Vogel has 11 punts inside the twenty yard line without a touchback.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Lions Scouting Report II: When Detroit has the ball
Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford vs. the Packers defense Matthew Stafford may be the most physically gifted quarterback in the NFC North. Now with Aaron Rodgers gone, he is the best quarterback in the division-by far! Stafford makes throws from multiple platforms, he is very mobile and will make the throw on the run when he vacates the pocket more so than tuck-the-ball-and-run.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Lions Scouting Report III: When Green Bay has the ball
Packers quarterback Brett Hundley vs. the Detroit defense Quarterback Brett Hundley has had substandard statistics in his seven quarters of action since Aaron Rodgers' injury. Against the Saints, he was 12-25 for 87 yards, 1 sack, no touchdown passes and one interception for a 39.9 passer rating. He also rushed for 44 yards on three carries including a 14-yard touchdown and a 22-yard scamper.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Lions Scouting Report I: About the matchup
Monday brings the 176th renewal of the Green Bay Packers-Detroit Lions series, combining the regular season and postseason. The Packers own a 100-68-7 advantage. It should be noted, the Lions lost 24 straight games from 1992 through 2014 on Wisconsin soil. That was the longest streak of one team losing to the other on the road in NFL history. In 2015 at Lambeau Field, Detroit finally upended Green Bay 18-16 to snap the streak.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Saints scouting report III: When Green Bay has the ball
Brett Hundley vs. Dennis Allen's New Orleans defense Last week at Minnesota, Hundley was 18 of 33 for 157 yards, 4 sacks, 1 touchdown pass and three interceptions for a 39.6 passer rating. This is his first career NFL start. Last time a QB besides Aaron Rodgers started a game for Green Bay was December 22nd, 2013 vs Pittsburgh, Matt Flynn.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Saints scouting report II: When New Orleans has the ball
Saints quarterback Drew Brees vs. the Green Bay defense He has not had to be quite as dynamic this season, and he is throwing to some new receivers this year, but Drew Brees is still one of the elite quarterbacks in the game today. He currently ranks 5th in passer rating, third in completion percentage and has thrown 10 touchdown passes with just two interceptions. Brees can make every throw and is as accurate as anybody.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Saints scouting report I: About the combatants
The New Orleans Saints (3-2) are coming off a wild 52-38 victory over the Detroit Lions, fueled by impressive performances from the Saints backfield, in their first game since trading away Adrian Peterson. RB's Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara combined for over 200 yards and two touchdowns while the Saints defense registered three touchdowns of their own in the victory.
Wayne Larrivee goes inside the Lombardi Cancer Foundation's expanded reach
The Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation is in its 47th year. Over the course of nearly five decades, they have raised $19 million in the fight against cancer. Along the way, The Green Bay Packers have been supportive of this mission. Now, in October, the Packers and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation partner together in a formal fashion through the Packers vs. Cancer campaign. It's one of the many ways the foundation has expanded nationally.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Vikings Scouting Report I: About Minnesota
The series: All-time, the Packers lead the regular season 59-50-2; the teams are 1-1 in post-season. The Packers lead the series in games played in Minneapolis or Bloomington, 28 wins to 27 losses. The Packers and Vikings have split the season series both of the past two years. Green Bay has won five of the last seven at Minnesota. Of the past 29 regular-season meetings between the teams, 20 of those games have been decided by seven points or less.

Below, listen to Wayne's podcast where he gives his "Back Page" on the Packers' incredible win in Dallas and a special one-on-one with hopefully-soon-to-be-Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Kramer. This past week, week five, was the first week of real NFL football, but unfortunately the rest of the season will be played out without stars like Odell Beckham Jr. and J.J. Watt.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Cowboys scouting report IV: When Green Bay has the ball
Aaron Rodgers vs. the Dallas defense In two games against the Dallas defense last year Aaron Rodgers completed 69.4% of his passes for 324.5 yards per game, with 3 TD passes and 2 interceptions for a passer rating of 93.7. We like to put numbers on everything in sports, but numbers never tell the full story of a quarterback’s ability or impact on winning a game.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Cowboys scouting report III: When Dallas has the ball
Dak Prescott vs. the Packers defense Dak Prescott was a revelation last year! A fourth round draft pick, he only started because Tony Romo injured his back in a preseason game and backup Kellen Moore went down with an ankle injury in camp. All Prescott did was set club rookie records with 3,667 yards, 23 TD passes and just 4 interceptions. He became the first rookie quarterback in team history named to the Pro Bowl and the first to win the AP Offensive rookie of the year award.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Cowboys scouting report II: About Green Bay
The Packers are 3-1, coming off a 35-14 victory over the Chicago Bears last week. A treacherous second quarter of the season opens as the Packers take on the Cowboys. Green Bay will be on the road next Sunday at division rival Minnesota (2-2), where they lost last season. The Packers will host one of the game’s top quarterbacks in Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints (2-2) on Oct. 22 before closing October on a bye. They will return Nov.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Cowboys scouting report I: About Dallas
The Cowboys are coming off a 35-30 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Dallas had a 17-6 lead in the first half but they could not hold off the Rams in the second half and fell to 2-2. The Cowboys were 13-3 last season, winning the NFC East. They lost 11 players in free agency and two to retirement from last season. Those players started 94 games for the Cowboys during last year’s surprising season.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bears scouting report I: On playing Thursday night games
First off, why Thursday night football? And why is it less than what you see in terms of performance by the two teams compared to what you might see on a Sunday? First off, it is a short week and football is unlike some of the other sports, due to the sheer numbers of people who play in a football game. It requires preparation, rehearsal, practice. You don’t get that on a week where you play on Sunday and then on Thursday night.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bears scouting report IV: When the Packers have the ball
As I mentioned in part III, the Packers and Bears are a tale of two different ways of getting it done offensively, Green Bay has run 207 offensive plays; only 60 of those plays have been running calls, 134 passing with 13 sacks. The Packers pass roughly 71 percent of the time. They run it 29 percent. Chicago is stout up front defensively. There could be pass protection problems for the Packers against speed of the Chicago linebackers off the edge in Vic Fangio’s 3-4 defense.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bears scouting report III: When Chicago has the ball
The Packers are Bears are a tale of two different ways of getting it done offensively. The Packers are a passing team led by the best quarterback in the NFL and a very good corps of receivers. Not the Bears, even if they throw it more than they run. The Bears have run just 187 plays, 73 of which were runs and 107 pass attempts with 7 sacks. That comes out to 39 percent runs and 61 percent passing calls.

There is a desperation to week three unlike any other week of the NFL season.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bengals Scouting Report II: Inside the combatants
I don’t know what to make of the Bengals. They come in 0-2 and have looked bad doing it. In two games they have given up eight sacks and scored just nine points. They have three field goals to show for two home games, but they have gone against two of the better defenses in the league in Baltimore and Houston. The Bengals are the first team since the 1939 Philadelphia Eagles to open the season with two home games but fail to score a touchdown in either of them.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bengals Scouting Report IV: When the Packers have the ball
Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap Vs. Packers OT Kyle Murphy or Bryan Bulaga Bulaga was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice which is good news for the Packers, because Dunlap is a load at defensive end for the Bengals. Dunlap is the Bengals best pure pass rusher along the defensive line. Last year he was selected to the Pro Bowl, tied for the team lead with 8 sacks.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bengals Scouting Report I: Why this is a 'must-win' game
I know what you’re all saying, the next five days bring just the Bengals and Bears, two 0-2 teams right? This should be a lay-down, right? Quarterback Aaron Rodgers said it best after the NFC title game last January in Atlanta. “We’ve got to go all in right from the start. We need to host one of these games,” said Rodgers. What he was talking about is how the Packers can’t afford to get off to slow starts and expect to host the NFC Championship game.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Bengals Scouting Report III: When the Bengals have the ball
Bengals OLT Cedric Ogbuehi ORT Jake Fisher vs Clay Matthews, Kyler Fackerel and Ahmad Brooks The Bengals offensive line has struggled in the first two weeks of the season. After last season they decided to let their two best offensive linemen, guard Kevin Zeitler and tackle Andrew Whitworth ,leave in the offseason. The Bengals are a draft and develop team and they had drafted Cedric Ogbuehi in the first round of the 2015 draft and Jake Fisher in the second round of the same lottery.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Seahawks pregame primer III: When Seattle has the ball
What do you do about Russell Wilson? Wilson is healthy after a year of leg injuries robbed him of his elite escape-ability skills. When healthy, he’s about the only QB outside of Aaron Rodgers you don’t want to chase from he pocket. He throws a soft very catchable ball, is extremely accurate on the run, and some of Seattle’s biggest plays come when he buys time and goes sandlot. That said, it is hard to be consistent with a sandlot style QB.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Seahawks pregame primer II: About the Packers
The Green Bay Packers went 3-1 in the pre season for the third time in the last 4 years. The Packers are coming off a 10-6 regular season and NFC North Division Championship. They beat the Giants and won at Dallas before falling in Atlanta to the Falcons in the NFC Championship game.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Seahawks pregame primer IV: When Green Bay has the ball
Aaron Rodgers was awfully good against Seattle last December, completing 18 of 23 passes for 246 yards, 3 TD's no interceptions with just one sack. His passer rating was 150.8. Compared to what Wilson did that day, the passer rating disparity was +107.1 in favor of Rodgers and the Packers! With limited preseason action as usual, he finished last year on a tear and his ability to maneuver inside the pocket will be a key against a “loaded” Seattle front seven. Receiving corps vs.
Wayne Larrivee's Packers-Seahawks pregame primer I: About the Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks went 4-0 in the preseason, the third time under Pete Carroll the club has gone undefeated in summer play. This is the 12th time since 2000 the Seahawks have opened the campaign on the road. Last season they went 10-5-1, first in the NFC West. They were 7-1 at home and 3-4-1 on the road. They have posted five straight 10-win seasons. Last year, they lost three games by nine points or more, including 38-10 at Green Bay. They also blew a home game to Arizona.
Wayne Larrivee's Week 1 Regular Season NFL Power Poll
Our first regular season power poll was all about paper, but this one has quite a bit to do with the preseason medical report. (Here much more commentary in the podcast player above!)1. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS -- o losing Edelman will hurt -- but consider this -- the Pats play in the AFC East where Miami now has Jay Cutler at quarterback and Buffalo and the Jets are in “fire sale” mode. That means the world champs get six wins almost right out of the gate!2.

My first power poll of the season, the preseason power poll, when everyone is healthy—with the exception of the Miami Dolphins and everyone is optimistic because in the NFL as we have seen year to year, anything can happen. After all, this is not the no competition league—the NBA where you have two teams, Golden State and Cleveland, and everyone else is just playing games.
