Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Twelve articles for Yoair, a content mill for a ticket booking service.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. From age 6-8, I had an electronic one (a bit disappointing because I wanted an antique). Cap's lock busted.

How is social media changing news?

Topicality and chasing SEO is not giving writers a gap between stimulus and response. Most articles are ridiculously underbaked.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To journal; to act as a witness to the splendors and horrors of the world around you while being a gracious host to your reader.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Paris paper, a leaky fountain pen, and, for my subsequent drafts, Google Docs.

What's your favorite social network?

Discord.

Who do you wish followed you?

Anyone, really. I love a lively, healthy conversation and I wish I had more of it in my digital life.

Why did you become a journalist?

It was an easier way to fill up the page and doubled as a form of therapy.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I think my Succession article is the best commentary ever written about the show. Brian Rodenbeck said it will probably get its due in time.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

You will have to define what journalism means to you.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Almost anything I oversaw at Yoair. My co-editor was approving everything without any oversight or quality control, so I eventually gave up.

What's your favorite drink?

Just a nice cup of tea for me, please.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

if I'm not at my computer, I'm writing with a pen and pad. Every once in a while, I'll paint miniatures or play Bach on my piano.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Atlantic has some amazing op-eds. Ta-Nehisi Coates produced some of my favorite works in the form.
