Materials AMC-109 (previously LTX-10911; Fig. 1a) was obtained in the form of dry powder from Amicoat AS, Norway. The powder was dissolved in milliQ water to stock solutions of 1–25 mg/ml, stored at room temperature shielded from the access of air and light, and used for the maximum of one month. Staphylococcus aureus cells, strain RN4220, NCTC8325-4 derivative, restriction deficient and cured of prophages72, was a generous gift from prof. J. M van Dijl from University Medical Centrum Groningen.
