Toch kennen de meeste mensen vooral de filmversie uit 1972 van Bob Fosse, die acht Oscars kreeg en van Liza Minelli een ster maakte. Nog altijd is nachtclubzangeres Sally Bowles haar bekendste en volgens velen beste rol. Zelfs wie de film nooit heeft gezien haalt Minelli’s Bowles zo voor de geest: zwart hotpantspakje, bolhoed, kousen met jarretelles, één been op een stoel.
