1 INTRODUCTION The occipital cortex, which is typically involved in visual processing, can also be activated in congenitally blind (CB) and early blind (EB) individuals due to cross-modal processing of information from other intact senses (Amedi et al., 2003; Burton et al., 2010; Beisteiner et al., 2015; see Bavelier & Neville, 2002 and Bridge & Watkins, 2019 for reviews).
