For Ad Pros, the Big Game Can Become a Super Bowl of Stress
When you're a creative director, having a commercial on the Super Bowl is awesome. By the way can I say Super Bowl? Or do I have to call it the "big game?" Someday the NFL will just trademark the "big game" and then we'll have to go to something even more stupid. Large match? Gigantic contest? Super-sized sports thing? Anyway, since I founded my own shop, I've found myself making regional Super Bowl ads for the past couple of years. Which is fine with me.

Meetings I Don't Miss: The Opinion Gauntlet
I've been indie for about two years now. And there are some things I do miss about working at an ad agency. The excitement of winning a new biz pitch. The occasional beer after work. The near constant availability of bananas. But there are many more things that I don't miss at all. Like a meeting I have come to call "The Opinion Gauntlet." This was a meeting that I was forced to have after a couple of weeks of working on a big creative assignment.
It's Hard to Find a Good Creative Distraction These Days. Thank God for Pop-A-Shot
The pool table. The foosball table. The kegerator. The bubble hockey. The drink cart. In "creative" office lore, there existed one or, usually, many of the above. Typically, they served multiple purposes. They demonstrated to clients, prospective clients, employees and prospective employees that the office was a booming, bustling, "creative" place to be. At the same time, these structures provided an outlet—other than the internet—for creative folks to distract themselves, if even for a few moments.
Anthony Davis, King Bach, T-Pain 'Own Their Ridges' for Ruffles
Tagged "Own Your Ridges," the push from creative and production studio Motive "is meant to inspire our fans to own all the things about them that 'zig' when everyone else 'zags,'" says Stacy Taffet, vp of marketing at Frito-Lay North America, a unit of PepsiCo. "We want to offer a platform for our fans to find power in their uniqueness. Because nothing is more magnetic than showing up as authentically you." Now, that's a lot to ask of a campaign for salty, crunchy snacks.
How to Make a Stock Footage Commercial That Doesn't Suck
Stock footage used to be reserved for infomercials and industrials with titles like "Know your Flange Family." Now, thanks to the pandemic, it's everywhere. Here's what I've learned about how to make a TV spot when you don't have the luxury of shooting, whether it's because of budget or time or a worldwide health crisis. Don't write a manifesto ad. They're great in a new-business pitch to sell your amazing new tagline. But they've always been dangerous.
Global Soccer Stars Help Bring Pepsi's 'Fizz to Life'
"In 2021, we are celebrating unstoppable human spirit, not in spite of the times we're in, but because this is a moment and no matter what, we need to keep moving forward with a smile," says Natalia Filippociants, vp of marketing for global beverages at PepsiCo. "From music to football, the new creative encourages the world to break free of conventions, expectations and the bubble of sameness that we often find ourselves in."
