1 Introduction Lanthipeptides represent a large group of ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) characterized by intramolecular thioether crosslinks called lanthionine and methyllanthionine [1, 2]. Their wide-ranging functions, including antimicrobial and antifungal activity, virulence functions, and signaling roles [3], and their promise for bioengineering [4, 7], have motivated researchers to discover new members by genome mining exercises [8, 10].
