Harvard’s season in review
To begin its 2017–18 season, Harvard was unable to repeat last year’s dominant 51–21 victory over Rhode Island, this time dropping a 17–10 decision. Despite a stellar performance by running back Charlie Booker, who rushed for a then-career high 139 yards — including runs of 50 and 57 yards — the Crimson were unable to keep their offense on schedule. This was particularly evident in the second half, as both teams remained scoreless.
TENNIS: Elis compete at national event
Three members of the Yale men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled west this week for the ITA All-American Championships. The Bulldogs had their feet held close to the fire in one of the most prestigious events for collegiate tennis players, rivaled only by the National Indoor Championship and the NCAA Championship. The tournament pitted Dylan King ’20, Ziqi Wang ’18 and Mimi Levine ’21 against the nation’s best tennis players.
Leonard ’19, Nicholas ’19 pace Elis in 2017
The Yale men’s golf team has started this season strong, finishing second overall at the Cornell Invitational on Sept. 16, a week after a fourth overall finish at the Doc Glimmer tournament. But these successes also marked individual triumphs for some team members. Eoin Leonard ’19 and James Nicholas ’19 finished first individually at the Doc Glimmer and Cornell Invitational, respectively. The wins marked each golfer’s first collegiate tournament win.
MEN’S SOCCER: Slow yet steady improvement under Stannard
The men’s soccer team that head coach Kylie Stannard inherited at Yale in 2015 bore little resemblance to the Michigan State team he left. As assistant head coach, Stannard had helped lead Michigan State to two consecutive Elite Eight appearances. The 1–13–3 Bulldogs would need to make major changes if they were to come close to the success that the Spartans had enjoyed. Some of those changes would be painful.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Hudson ’18 leads Bulldog resurgence
Carlin Hudson ’18 is no stranger to championships. As captain of the Berkeley High School soccer team, the California native helped lead the Yellowjackets to three league championships and also captained her club team, Bay Oaks Botafogo, to two Northern California championships. But since coming to Yale, the 5-foot-9 defender has only been a part of one Bulldogs’ team that finished higher than sixth in the conference standings.

CREW: Yale claims first in all 16 races
This past weekend was a busy one for Yale’s crews, as all three teams raced to success across the board. Showing off the impressive depth of each team, the Bulldogs won all of their races this weekend. The No. 2 heavyweight team swept No. 8 Dartmouth, holding on to the Olympic Axe, while the No. 2 lightweights also won each of their three races at the Joy Cup against No. 9 Georgetown and No. 12 Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
WOMEN’S CREW: No. 5 Bulldogs thump Cornell
