Leland officials hold public workshop for open burning ban Original
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Leland town leaders brought in state officials Monday night to discuss parameters around a burn ban that went into effect in October. Town of Leland Councilwoman Veronica Carter spoke about Leland’s ordinance that put a full stop to open burning for developers within town limits. “This will be the first time any municipality in the state of North Carolina has tried this,” said Carter. “We realized that smoke, smoke changes direction depending on the wind...

Will Peterson's Long Trail FKT Trip Report - The Trek
Welcome to my trip report from my recent FKT (Fastest Known Time) on the Long Trail in Vermont. My name is Will Peterson and I am a backpacker and ultramarathon runner. I grew up in western Maine and now live in Norwich, Vermont, where I go to medical school at Dartmouth College. Leading up to this summer, over the last five years I have thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, set the supported and unsupported FKTs on the New Hampshire 4,000 Footers, and set the unsupported FKT on the Long Trail.
Lessons In Cultural Competency From Mango House
In addition to medical services, Mango House includes tenant spaces for the refugees and asylees to use, including dozens of shops, seven restaurants, and about 15 spaces for meetings, events and religious gatherings. Parmar is of Indian descent. He said his family was on the privileged side of immigration. “In my observation, immigrants follow a bit of a bimodal distribution. You have those who are better off and those who are worse off. That's by design,” he explained.
600+ cookbooks and passion brought this Colorado home chef to the national stage
600+ cookbooks and passion brought this Colorado home chef to the national stage Rocky Mountain PBS CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Inside her Centennial home of three decades, Abbe Odenwalder has quite the collection — bear figurines, windchimes, and cookbooks. The more than 600 cookbooks are truly where her heart lies. They helped her get to where she is now: a contestant on the second season of "The Great American Recipe" on PBS.
The eucharistic pilgrimage of the Mass amidst National Eucharistic Revival
In June, we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. This weighty feast day gives us the opportunity to give thanks for the body of Christ as we launch into the National Eucharistic Revival. First and foremost, we give thanks for the real presence of Christ’s body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist.
New cannabis business model demonstrates the innovation that comes with inclusion
New cannabis business model demonstrates the innovation that comes with inclusion Rocky Mountain PBS DENVER — There’s no doubt Colorado’s cannabis industry has become an influential one. Models created here have spread across the country, and some across the world. But along with this accolade is a very clear display of the racial disparities within the industry.
Denver Dream Center
According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, formerly incarcerated people are almost 10 times more likely to experience homelessness than the general population. After spending time in and out of prison for several years, then experiencing homelessness, Tyrone Thompkins told Rocky Mountain PBS how excited he is to finally move into his own home soon.
Worlds collide at Denver Roller Derby
Roller derby is often described as "an extreme race on four wheels," which is the perfect outlet for the Chrisbachers to eliminate stress, spend time together and express themselves. “Alexis and I play two different positions. I’m a jammer and she’s a blocker,” Jess said, explaining that roller derby is their favorite way to be together as a couple.

White Mountains Direttissima FKT Gear List
Because I had to average over 40 miles and 13,000 feet of elevation gain per day, the White Mountains Direttissima was the first time that I made a concerted effort to shave as many ounces as possible. Much of my weight savings came from the unique way that I went about getting nutrition, which is vastly different from what I normally do on backpacking trips. **Disclaimer** – I am not sponsored by any of these companies, and I was not given any of this gear.
My Trip Report From Setting the White Mountains Direttissima Record
**Disclaimer about the categorization as unsupported** I took water from the AMC Huts and used their composting toilets. I deferred to the judgement of the folks who run Fastest Known Time about whether my hike should be considered Unsupported or Self-Supported, and it was decided that the huts are a White Mountains tradition, and that using the free services at the huts should not disqualify from being unsupported. I did not have anyone come join me at any point during my Direttissima.
A New Challenge: The White Mountains Direttissima Record
Like many prospective PCT thru-hikers, I read the PCT Association’s statement on March 19th with overwhelming disappointment. Others eloquently express the anguish of the thru-hiking community over the past few months; I share these emotions, but I do not suppose that I could add anything that has not already been said, and so I won’t. That is not what this post is about. Life doesn’t always go according to plan.
Planning My Second Thru-Hike: Purpose and Whimsy
After completing your first long distance hike, it is common to go through several “hiking phases”. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I experienced three such phases after completing my Appalachian Trail thru-hike. They manifested in the following manner: Phase 1 – Post Trail Blues Initially, I wanted almost nothing to do with hiking.
Ultralight Backpacks Don’t Make Sense for *Most* Thru-Hikers
You’re diligently preparing for your first (or next) big hike. You’ve done your research, and you’ve decided that lightweight or ultralight backpacking is the way for you. Oh, dear reader, caution. Looming in the wings is a mistake that will cost you much comfort: the ultralight backpack. Just to be abundantly clear, this is not an indictment of ultralight backpacking, but ultralight backpacks. First, let us examine the general philosophy of ultralight backpacking.
Modern Millennial Pilgrimage: 75 miles of walking and reflection to Gethsemani of Our Lady Abbey
Breakfast behind us and only twelve miles to Bardstown, it should be easier to truly focus on prayer instead of covering ground. That said, we have developed a prayer schedule for our pilgrimage. When first beginning to walk, we pray a Psalm and ask for the intercession of any saints or others who we want to be praying for us throughout the day. We also give thanks for the hosts from the night before. We pray the Angelus at the end of the first hour of waking, then a Rosary at the end of the second.
GUEST EDITORIAL: Georgia football loses big - Rome News-Tribune: Editorials
In a matter of five short days, Georgia lost two of the best men who have ever coached the game of football in this state. Just after the University of Georgia announced that Coach Mark Richt would resign, Shorter University announced that Coach Phil Jones will “retire.” What a loss for our great state. I have a unique viewpoint on this situation as I was a student at Georgia when Coach Richt won an SEC championship in 2005.
