Recent grad injured in crash, family searches for missing dog

SYRACUSE — A teenager was seriously injured in a car accident just one day after graduating from West Canada Valley Junior-Senior High School, and the family is seeking help locating a dog that fled from the scene. Trenton Polhamus was involved in an accident on Sunday, June 28, near Syracuse and airlifted to the hospital, according to Polhamus' family. His car was totaled, and his four-year-old golden retriever, Cooper, was lost in the crash and has not yet been found.

Verona Fire Department mourns unexpected loss of assistant fire chief

VERONA — An Oneida County assistant fire chief died unexpectedly, according to the Verona Fire Department, where he served. Michael R. Hawthorne, of Oneida Castle, died Monday, June 22, at Oneida Health Hospital. He was 39. He was a life member of the Verona Fire Department and previously held the ranks of captain and lieutenant. He also was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a military police officer from 2007 to 2015 with postings at Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Belvoir, Virginia; and Fort Drum.
