VERONA — An Oneida County assistant fire chief died unexpectedly, according to the Verona Fire Department, where he served. Michael R. Hawthorne, of Oneida Castle, died Monday, June 22, at Oneida Health Hospital. He was 39. He was a life member of the Verona Fire Department and previously held the ranks of captain and lieutenant. He also was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a military police officer from 2007 to 2015 with postings at Fort Bliss, Texas; Fort Belvoir, Virginia; and Fort Drum.
