Sky News VIDEO Managing Director of Smart Pension, Will Wynne, and Anne- Marie O'Leary, editor-in-chief of parenting site, netmums.com, discusses auto enrolment on Sky News and in particular, how it will affect employers who hire home help such as nannies, and don't consider themselves to be employers.
Workplace pension auto enrolment explained in under 90 seconds
The UK government has introduced pension auto enrolment to ensure more employees are covered by workplace pensions. More than 800,000 small business owners will have to comply with this new legislation in the next 12 months alone (each business owner will receive a letter explaining when they will need to comply). New to the subject? Check out the explainer video below for a no-nonsense introduction for employers that will tell you everything you need to know.
What is the auto enrolment review looking at in 2017?
Despite auto enrolment being new to small businesses, it was first introduced in 2012 and was a glint in the Department for Work and Pensions’s eye for a long time before that. So, while it feels rather strange that a lengthy review is already taking place, it’s really not a bad idea to make sure it’s all going to plan. Why getting auto enrolment tech right is key for your business
In five years’ time, all 5.5m British businesses will have completed the auto enrolment process and all newly-formed firms will do it automatically. Industry experts suggest in the future, the ongoing employer responsibilities will simply be an extension of accounting software, payroll or HR platforms and employees will have their own portal from which to check their pension balance.
How do you know which staff to auto enrol?
For modern businesses, it’s often hard to work out exactly which staff must be automatically enrolled and who is entitled to ask to be included under the new legislation for workplace pensions. Today, it’s quite common for smaller firms to have a mixture of full-time, part-time and seasonal workers on the PAYE books over the course of a year. They might also use regular self-employed contractors. Do they qualify for a pension too? It’s tricky.
Ten tips to keep you on top of your auto enrolment comms duties
One of the mandatory, ongoing responsibilities for employers before, during and after switching on auto enrolment is to consistently and regularly communicate with staff about workplace pensions. In fact, The Pensions Regulator’s (TPR) guidance is explicit about exactly which information must be given in which form by which date, linked to your staging date. It can’t just be a friendly natter over a coffee in the staff room - there are some very specific communication boxes to be ticked here.
Auto enrolment is coming: here’s how to get your company up to speed
An estimated are set to reach their auto enrolment pension staging date over the course of this year, more than doubling the number in 2016. That’s a whopping figure and, unlike larger firms that have already completed the process, it will probably be the first time these smaller firms have ever had to think about pensions in any detail – often even on a personal level.
