This is my second stint at the Columbia Daily Tribune.

I first came to the paper in 2001, the day after I graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. I covered the city government beat through the fall of 2002, when I took over the crime and courts beat.

I left the Tribune in May 2003 and wound up in Fayetteville, N.C., where I worked for The Fayetteville Observer as a military reporter and later as an assignment editor. My stint as a reporter included a trip to Iraq in 20…

When Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC unveiled its One A9 in October, every story mentioned how the device was an iPhone 6 copycat. One look at the One A9, and it’s clear — the aluminum unibody design, the antenna lines, the speaker placement … . If not twins, the One A9 and iPhone 6 are at least siblings. HTC maintains that the design is a natural evolution of its One line.

It was 2009, and Apple’s iPhone was the king of smartphones after only two years on the market. Every smartphone maker was looking for a way to differentiate itself. Motorola chose to focus on features that the iPhone lacked, and it teamed up with Verizon to create a device to challenge the iPhone head-on. Motorola was not the first to build a smartphone with a physical keyboard, but it sought a differentiator for people who did not like typing on small iPhone screens.

City reporter for my current employer. I started the day after I graduated from journalism school.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, but not for producing journalism. I used one in school.

How is social media changing news?

News no longer is a one-way proposition. Anyone can use social media tools to report news or to talk to reporters.
