Motorcyclist sentenced for killing Des Moines teen in wrong-way crash

A Grinnell man with a years-long pattern of driving offenses has been sentenced to prison for striking and fatally injuring a Des Moines teenager with a motorcycle. Kaelin Meinders, 23, admitted in his guilty plea that his actions "resulted in the death" of 15-year-old Santiago "Santi" Diaz Rhone II, in the collision on Sept. 20, 2025, in the 4900 block of NE 29th St. in Des Moines. Meinders was hospitalized after the crash, which reportedly came as Santiago was crossing the street.

Two Des Moines County men are facing federal charges for running what prosecutors are calling a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme Chad Boal and Cory Richards are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, while Boal faces an additional three charges for wire fraud and 12 for money laundering. Court records show the indictment was originally filed in May. Trial for the two men is currently scheduled for April 2027.
