The Show of a Lost World (Troxy Live 2024) The Cure
On Friday, November 1, 2024, The Cure released Songs of a Lost World. That same evening, they performed the entire record at London’s Troxy for 3,000 fans and over a million more through a free global stream. The brief liner notes bill The Show of a Lost World as a “recut / remixed / remastered film of all thirty-one songs” performed that night.
BOOK REVIEW: Infinite Dreams - Iron Maiden
Infinite Dreams documents the as-of-now complete history of Iron Maiden from 1975-2025. Fifty years is a lot of time and this is a lot of book. It measures 9.9 by 12.9 inches and is 1.4 inches thick with 352 pages. It’s hardcover with thick and glossy pages. I couldn’t find a weight listed, but as you can imagine from the dimensions, this is a heavy book for a heavy band. With 1,024 color illustrations, Infinite Dreams earns its subtitle of The Official Visual History.
MOVIE REVIEW: Becoming Led Zeppelin
Becoming Led Zeppelin opens with the sound of “Good Times Bad Times” backed by a video of Led Zeppelin playing live. Intertwined are black and white clips of wartime footage, presumably World War II since there appears, for example, a newspaper frontpage dated May 1945. While few would describe Zeppelin as a World War II band, all four members were born in the 1940s. Led Zeppelin rose from the ashes and shadows of post-war conditions.
ALBUM REVIEW: The Cure - Songs of a Lost World
Songs of a Lost World is the first new studio album from The Cure in sixteen years. Fans always hope for one more classic album from veteran bands (hard to believe debut album Three Imaginary Boys arrived in 1979). While some early opinions hype Songs of a Lost World as The Cure’s best since Disintegration (1989), that’s overlooking Wish (1992) and Bloodflowers (2000).
Deep inflow transport and dispersion in the Gulf of St. Lawrence revealed by a tracer release experiment - Communications Earth & Environment
Abstract The Gulf of St. Lawrence is increasingly affected by bottom water hypoxia; however, the timescales and pathways of deep water transport remain unclear. Here, we present results from the Deep Tracer Release eXperiment (TReX Deep), during which an inert SF5CF3 tracer was released inshore of Cabot Strait at 279 m depth to investigate deep inflow transport and mixing rates. Dispersion was also assessed via neutrally-buoyant Swish floats.
ALBUM REVIEW: Blue Electric Light - Lenny Kravitz
Lenny Kravitz’s latest album ends his longest pause between studio recordings. However, this is not due to lack of creativity or time spent in the studio.
ALBUM REVIEW: Kerry King - From Hell I Rise
When Slayer played the last date of their final tour on November 30, 2019, it brought the landmark thrash band’s career to a close. Although lead singer, bassist, and founding member Tom Araya never fully explained why he choose to end the band, the prevailing narrative—confirmed in part by a 2019 interview with founding drummer Dave Lombardo—is that Araya wanted to spend more time with his family, and the neck issues that he had surgery for in 2010 continued to bother him.
ALBUM EREVIEW: Judas Priest - Invincible Shield
In March 2022, guitarist Richie Faulkner stated that the songs for Invincible Shield “are a bit more progressive in places,” leading fans to wonder/worry if the next album would be Nostradamus II (the two-disc conceptual Nostradamus was met with mixed reception), end up bogged down by directionless meandering, or resemble questionable versions of Yes songs.
LIVE REVIEW: The Cure with special guests The Twilight Sad
First, praise to The Cure for keeping concert costs reasonable, especially in the age of dynamic pricing, platinum seating, and nebulous service fees that often equal or exceed the cost of the ticket. Although night one was already sold out and the second night was close to sold out when I started looking for tickets, tickets were still selling and reselling for their original price due to a request by Robert Smith to keep them at face value (Our seats were in the lower level, 110 DD 3 and 4).
ALBUM REVIEW: Metallica - 72 Seasons
HomeReviews - Music ReleasesALBUM REVIEW: Metallica – 72 Seasons James Hetfield explains, “72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are.” He says, “I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today.
ALBUM REVIEW: Wish 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition by The Cure
HomeReviews - Music ReleasesALBUM REVIEW: Wish 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition by The Cure In the early 2000s, The Cure announced a massive reissue and expansion of their studio albums as deluxe editions. Late December of 2004, Three Imaginary Boys (1979) appeared in stores. The Cure worked their way through the releases in rapid succession.
ALBUME REVIEW: Megadeth - The Sick, The Dying… and the Dead!
HomeReviews - Music ReleasesALBUME REVIEW: Megadeth – The Sick, The Dying… and the Dead! Six years have passed since Dystopia (2016), Megadeth’s last studio record. Much has changed since then. We’ve endured an ongoing global pandemic. Cofounder David Ellefson was dismissed from the band after a scandal. His exit comes as little surprise. He’s been in and out of the band several times and unsuccessfully sued Mustaine for 18.5 million dollars in 2004.
ALBUM REVIEW: 'Hushed and Grim' by Mastodon
HomeReviews - Music ReleasesALBUM REVIEW: ‘Hushed and Grim’ by Mastodon Formed in 2000, Atlanta band Mastodon have released eight studio albums while holding the original recording line-up together (sharing song-writing credits equally probably helps): Troy Sanders (bass and vocals), Brent Hinds (guitar and vocals), Bill Kelliher (guitar and backing vocals), and Brann Dailor (drums and vocals). Hushed and Grim, their latest release, is an exploration of death and the feelings surrounding it.
ALBUM REVIEW: Hear My Music - Jimi Hendrix
“>I’m hard-pressed to name a musician or band with more unofficial releases than Jimi Hendrix. The Grateful Dead actually designated special section in each venue just for fans who wanted to tape their shows. Led Zeppelin played over a decade and had plenty of zealous fans that used those opportunities to record them; a lot of studio work also leaked out over the years. Bob Dylan’s many decades have produced plenty of bootleg recordings.
GHOST - 'IMPERA' - Album Review - The Rockpit
Tobias Forge states that he drew his inspiration for Ghost’s latest album from The Rule of Empires, a book about empires. Unsurprisingly, he says that Impera is “about the rise and ultimately the inescapable fails and falls of empires.” While Impera is neither a concept album nor is every song strictly about empires, there is plenty of social commentary—if you make the connections—and an overall sense of examining and questioning our current place in civilization.
ALBUM REVIEW: Morning Symphony Ideas - Jimi Hendrix
One wonders how a guy with only three studio releases during his lifetime has a posthumous discography reaching well into double digits. This is without even counting unofficial recordings. Like many legacy artists, Hendrix’s swelled catalog is partially the result of inflation from duplication and repackaging in the form of rereleases and greatest hits.
ACCEPT - "EAT THE HEAT" Retro Album Review - The Rockpit
Bands that record just one studio album with a particular singer are an intriguing phenomenon. While not always fan-favorites, such albums hint at an alternative path for the band, a forking road, a history that never was. Consider Mötley Crüe’s Mötley Crüe (John Corabi), L.A. Guns’ Shrinking Violet (Jizzy Pearl), and Van Halen’s III (Gary Cherone). Black Sabbath score multiple entries on this list with Born Again (Ian Gillan), The Eternal Idol (Ray Gillen), and Seventh Star (Glenn Hughes).
LETHAL - "PROGRAMMED" Retro Album Review - The Rockpit
In 1990, Lethal released their debut album, Programmed. At that point, I never heard this band on the radio, saw them on MTV, or knew anyone who had heard them (all of this is still true to this day). The only mention I ever came across was a short review in some magazine such as Guitar World or RIP comparing Lethal to Iron Maiden. That was all I needed to read. When I read the comparison to Iron Maiden, I expected Lethal to sound identical to Iron Maiden.

"Everything Is Everything": 25 Moments That Make 'Marriage Story' Fall Apart Masterfully
Marriage Story tracks the dissolution of the marriage between New York theater director Charlie Barber (Adam Driver) and his wife Nicole (Scarlett Johansson), a former film actress who stars in his plays but leaves with their eight-year-old son Henry (Azhy Robertson) for a role in a television show in California. The point of view is from the camera, so viewers see his side, her side, and the shared and accumulated truth of both their qualities and their faults.

Dead Can Dance Offer Up a Brief, Largely Instrumental Album with 'Dionysus'
Dionysus Dead Can Dance PIAS 2 November 2018 Originating in Australia, Dead Can Dance formed in 1981. The core musicians are Brendan Perry who sings and plays a variety of instruments, and Lisa Gerrard who provides ethereal and haunting vocals. Their self-titled debut album appeared 1984. The name and the music, much of which resemble the Cure's early work, led to them being labeled goth.
Aretha Franklin: The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967-1970
The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967-1970 Aretha Franklin Rhino 28 September 2018 Aretha Franklin is a hallelujah if there ever was one, the meeting of earth and cosmos. Atlantic Records co-owner and producer Jerry Wexler once described her voice like that "of an ecstatic hierophant". Through her voice, the sacred mysteries are revealed. The hand reaches to heaven.
The Drive Inside: An Interview with the Crystal Method
The Trip Home The Crystal Method Tiny e 2018-09-28 Amazon Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland formed the Crystal Method in the early 1990s, and 1997's Vegas was their first studio album. A pioneer of the big beat genre, they combined breakbeats with synth patterns to make atmospheric, sleek, rhythmic tracks. Cool enough for the late '90s alt-crowd, dancey enough for the club kids, and catchy enough for everybody else, Vegas brought the Crystal Method immediate airplay and attention.
Aretha Franklin: Now, as always, a star among stars
In 1967, promoter Pervis Spann placed a crown on Aretha Franklin’s head and recognized her as the Queen of Soul. The accolade is easily justified. She has 112 charting singles -- more than any other female artist -- 18 Grammy Awards and 42 albums and has sold over 75 million records worldwide. In 1987, she became the first female to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2008, Rolling Stone named her the greatest female singer ever. The awards and honors kept coming.

Nevermore's 'The Complete Collection' Does as Superb Job in Capturing the Metal Band's Career
The Complete Collection Nevermore Century Media 29 May 2018 For those who lived through the 1990s, it seems that Nevermore, formed in 1991, came around during a time when a lot of rock bands either adopted grunge stylings such as Kiss with Revenge (1992) and Warrant's Dog Eat Dog (1992), or lightened up like Metallica's Metallica (1991), Testament's The Ritual (1992), or Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction (1992).
Myths of Light and Dark
No left without a right. No up without a down. No inside without an outside. Opposites give each other meaning and are inextricably connected to each another. One of the great dualities or dichotomies is the one consisting of lightness and darkness.
'Blues and Haikus' Captures Jack Kerouac at a Transitional Phase in His Career
Blues and Haikus Jack Kerouac Real Gone Music 6 April 2018 Jack Kerouac, along with Allen Ginsberg, Diane di Prima, Amiri Baraka, William S. Burroughs, Joanne Kyger, Bob Kaufman, Brion Gysin, Gary Snyder, and many more, was part of a group of writers and artists known as the Beats. While they had a variety of approaches and aesthetics, they all pushed against the boundaries and definitions of normal in America. Many of the Beats are still writing and working today.
Reflection on Narcissus: Narcissus on Reflection
It’s not surprising in this new nation of Me that we’ve become obsessed with narcissism and fixated on narcissists (which is just how the narcissists want it anyway). Articles, quizzes, and columns are devoted to determining if our parents, our children, our siblings, our coworkers, our bosses, and our political leaders are narcissists. And, in typical narcissistic fashion, the person many of us are most concerned may be a narcissist is our self.
'How the West Was Won' Captures Led Zeppelin at Their Magical Peak
How the West Was Won Led Zeppelin Rhino 23 March 2018 During Led Zeppelin's active career fans had to make do with a single official live release, The Song Remains the Same (1976) sourced from three nights in 1973 at Madison Square Garden. Reception has always been mixed, though a 2007 rerelease improved the sound quality and expanded the track list by six songs. Since the band's official break up in 1980 after John Bonham's death, other live releases have been released.
Judas Priest Prove They Still Have 'Firepower' Left in Their Arsenal

The Monsters That Make Us: Things That Go Bump in the Mind
Source: Beast of Gévaudan/Public Domain Monster comes from the Latin monstrum, meaning something unnatural or unpleasant. Early thinkers thought a monster was some malfunction of nature. There are plenty of monsters in classical mythology. For example, Cerberus is a three-headed dog with a serpent for a tail. Called “the hound of Hades,” Cerberus guards the gates of the underworld to keep the dead from leaving.
Negative Press Project Celebrates the Music of Jeff Buckley on 'Eternal Life'
Eternal Life: Jeff Buckley Songs and Sounds Negative Press Project Ridgeway 17 Nov 2017 On 29 May 1997, Jeffrey Scott Buckley disappeared in the waters of Wolf River. Though the body was found a few days later, we've been trying to recover Jeff Buckley even since. He left and gifted us with one complete and finished full-length album, the stunning Grace, a debut of otherworldy talent suggesting Buckley had the potential to be the next Dylan or Springsteen.

Divination: We All Just Want to Know What’s Coming Next
Bauamulett Basler Hof Ground Plate Transcription Source: Heinrich Stürzl / CC BY-SA 3.0 / Wikimedia Commons We can define divination as using a systematic approach in order to try to gain insight into a situation or problem (Peek, 1991). In the Harry Potter world, divination includes more than just attempting to solve problems. It is the ability to see – and even be – in the beyond; although this idea of divination is not isolated to just the magical world.
AUTOBAHN: The Moral Crossing (album review)
The Moral Crossing AUTOBAHN Tough Love 3 Nov 2017 The name AUTOBAHN conjures up ideas of sleek, futuristic highways in Germany or perhaps the 1974 Kraftwerk album and title track. Actually, the band is from Leeds and they do have an electronic influence though it is not their primary sound.
Greta Van Fleet: From the Fires
In June of 2016, prolific producer Diplo lambasted the world of DJ's in an interview with Billboard, stating that EDM was dying. Coincidentally enough, the article's contents went viral and made their way into Vice Media's electronic music and culture channel Thump, which closed its doors after four years this summer amid company-wide layoffs.
Nine Inch Nails: Add Violence
As Trent Reznor's career progresses, it becomes easier and easier to compare him to David Bowie, Madonna, Prince, or Led Zeppelin because of the shifts, accelerations, decelerations, explorations, and spirals of his catalog. Add Violence is unique not because it's unlike anything we've heard before; it's everything we've heard before. It recalls every previous Nine Inch Nails album, and yet none in particular.
