Autor bestselleru V srdci moře vydal nové dílo The Rush: California Gold, the Civil War, and the Making of the Modern World(Horečka: Kalifornské zlato, občanská válka a zrod moderního světa). Kniha líčí šílený úprk do San Franciska v roce 1849 poté, co bylo v Kalifornii náhodou objeveno zlato.
Nathaniel Philbrick's New Book Could Give You Whiplash
However chaotic life may seem, cracking open the latest book from historian Nathaniel Philbrick will make it calm by comparison. The author behind the best-selling In the Heart of the Sea is out with a new work, The Rush: California Gold, the Civil War, and the Making of the Modern World, which chronicles the mad dash to San Francisco in 1849 after gold was accidentally discovered there.
Láska k papírovým mapám i drásavý hladomor.
Hamnet author Maggie O’Farrell on maps as rebellion
I knew Maggie O’Farrell would make me cry. After all, Land, the new book from the mistress of melancholy behind Hamnet, is set in the wake of the Irish Famine. I was not surprised, then, when reading Land, that I teared up over the deaths, the heart-rending depictions of workhouses, or her mercilessly crafted twists of fate. What did shock me was how melancholy her love for maps made me feel.

Forget Versailles: Paris’s Best Day Trip Is a Little-Known Northern Gem
It’s not exactly a pitch that leaves you yearning: “Come to France to visit the city of a thousand chimneys.” A former industrial city in the perpetually gray north of France, Roubaix once dominated the global wool industry. Nowadays, it only makes its way into the news as the birthplace of Bernard Arnault, Europe’s richest man. And yet, it is surprisingly one of the best day trips one can take from Paris.

This Overlooked Midwest City Is Full of Hidden Treasures Original
The world's greatest architect was dead, but nobody knew that this bedraggled man on the floor of the men's room at Penn Station was the Louis Kahn. Nearly fifty years before, Antonio Gaudí died because his beggar-like appearance meant bystanders did nothing when the 73-year-old was hit by a tram, leading to a delay in care that likely killed him.
From the Himalayas to Underrated Midwestern Cities, Where to Travel to in 2023
Photo Illustration by Erin O'Flynn/The Daily Beast/Getty While we don’t get to hit restart on the madness enveloping the world these days, when the clock strikes midnight at the end of this year we’ll at least get to start a new year afresh. With that new year, we can think about where exactly we want to travel. Do we want to finally go somewhere warm that will recharge our batteries? Plop ourselves down for a couple months and really sink into a culture?
Miami's Wynwood Has Its First Ever Hotel and It's Covered in Art
First it was the microbreweries, then it was food halls, or maybe it was vice versa. But every small city and town across America for the past decade was touting one or both of them to lure visitors and keep hold of residents. Over the last couple years, a new from-the-top-down amenity has become the hot selling point: street art. Once a blight or nuisance that needed to be stamped out, murals and graffiti now have the seal of approval from chambers of commerce and millionaire developers.

Is Bhutan, the 'World's Last Shangri-La', Worth the Hype-and the Price Tag?
They say nothing worth having comes easy, and that's certainly the case with Bhutan. The tiny Himalayan kingdom that only opened to the world in the 1970s and only recently reopened post-COVID in September, is a place where nearly everything is pretty, almost postcard picturesque. It's a land of still-unclimbed mountains, roaming tigers, and centuries-old Buddhist fortresses. Even its poorest farmhouses hanging on the steep valley mountainsides create the most romantic of scenes.
The Latest Chicago Hotel Blends the Old with the New
Perched 21 stories up in the air, high enough to see the top of the glass atrium of the iconic Rookery, is one of Chicago's newest hotels. It's a hotel in the heart of Chicago's financial district and fittingly, everything about The LaSalle Chicago, Autograph Collection, is very Chicago. It's one of the city's newest hotels and the latest selection for our hotel column, Room Key.

Bangkok's New Standard Hotel Simply Seethes With Coolness
From the rooftop bar to the delectable food to the poppy, trippy color scheme, the Bangkok Standard is the city's hip attraction for locals and visitors alike. Bangkok's second-tallest tower looks like a disintegrating video game skyscraper, with the cubic chunks missing from its side resembling pixels that have faded away. King Power Mahanakhon, as it's known, is pure Ole Scheeren, the German starchitect whose buildings often grab you via some spectacular twist.
America's Next Hot Destination Is This Midwestern City
Where do I begin to convince you of this city's wonders? Shall I take you inside the Nelson-Atkins, inarguably one of the best art museums in the country? Or should we start with the food? Or the magnificent homes, or the friendly people? Or, perhaps, I can persuade you to take a closer look at Kansas City by pointing out that my job allows me to go to my favorite cities every year-Paris, Mexico City, São Paulo, Los Angeles, and so on-and, yes, Kansas City is one I always visit.

This Hotel Is Bringing Some Miami Cool to San Francisco
Just as there are car fanatics, aviation junkies, and wine snobs, there are people who are just downright obsessed with hotels. They will not refrain from forking over the extra hundred or two if it means staying at a beloved property or someplace people are buzzing about. They usually have their favorite group, an extensive list on the overrated, and a couple of concierges or maitre-d's they are convinced truly love them.
A Murderous Innkeep, a Hidden Lakeside Mansion, and Unbeatable Views—Northwest Nevada Is a Trip for Everybody Original
Laura D. Fair was seeing red on the evening of Nov. 3, 1870, when, dressed in a veil and cloak, she shot and killed the man she loved on a San Francisco ferry. Or, at least that’s what her lawyers argued in court, the first plea of temporary insanity due to menstruation.

1 hour ago PROFESSIONAL POKER PLAYER PHIL HELLMUTH ONCE won $56,000 during a round of golf, but one annoyance lingers from that Las Vegas afternoon in 2007 when he and Jeff Friedman, a plus-3 who Hellmuth calls “the best golfing poker player” in the world, teamed up against a multimillionaire vitamin …
Newport’s Mansions Are a Treasure Hunt for the Nosy
The path from gaudy room to gaudy room in Newport’s mansions is often lined with rubber-bottom mats, but they might as well be conveyor belts. Millions of tourists pass through the fabled halls of the Breakers, Rough Point, Rosecliff, Marble House, and the rest, but passing through is often all they do. Necks craned, phone snapping, tongues wagging, they might stop… to wait for somebody to get out of their shot. Frankly, though, who can blame them?
Paris to Turn Off Eiffel Tower Lighting, Other Monuments, to Cut Energy Costs
The City of Light will now be very dark as the metropolis will be turning off the lights on its monuments to save on energy costs that have exploded as a result of the war in Ukraine. The Eiffel Tower will now be dark at 11:45 p.m., whereas normally it stayed lit until one in the morning. Other monuments will turn off even earlier, at 10 p.m. It’s part of a plan looking to cut the city’s energy costs by 10 percent.
Tree Falls on Tent in Olympic National Park Killing Canadian Man Thomas Bernier-Villeneuve
The National Park Service said Thursday that Thomas Bernier-Villeneuve, 34, from Canada died in Olympic National Park in Washington state after a tree fell on his tent. Bernier-Villeneuve was at a remote wilderness camp near Elk Lake. The Park Service was told Tuesday about the death but were not able to reach the site by helicopter until Wednesday.
The World’s Most Famous Architect Designed LA's Newest Hotel
The world is full of starchitects like Tadao Ando, Renzo Piano, Jeanne Gang, David Adjaye–even the ghost of Zaha Hadid is still going strong. But the most famous, the one most likely to be found in the upper parts of lists about the greatest of all time is 93-year-old Frank Gehry. While his buildings around the globe are renowned, the Canada-born architect first broke through in his adopted home of California.
San Francisco's Hottest New Attraction Is on Top of a Highway
They say youth is wasting on the young, but what about a playground with a view? That, after all, is what the youth of San Francisco have been given at the newest major addition to a national park–Presidio Tunnel Tops. Now, every day, hundreds of children will clamber, run, fall, and splash with the Golden Gate Bridge wreathed in fog as a backdrop. I was in San Francisco for the first time since the pandemic to check out a host of things old and new.
Eat Sheet: Our Tips on Where to Dine in Newport, Rhode Island
At first, Newport would seem to have it all—beautiful beaches, world-class sailing, glitzy mansions, and lots of history. But the food scene in my hometown wasn’t always the most exciting to return to, let alone give recommendations about to visiting friends. That’s largely changed and now the next time you’re in town trying to live out your Gilded Age fantasy, this list will give you a great starting point.
Is This the Future of Luxury Hotels? Original
Predicting what will happen in the world of travel is a fool’s game (hello COVID). But on a recent trip to the brand new Four Seasons Minneapolis for Room Key, a window into what global contemporary luxury hotels will look like going forward opened to us. When you think about what you didn’t like about a lot of hotel properties in the 2010s, the things that come to mind are the outdated decor, unimaginative food offerings, products the beauty industry left behind long ago, and limited amenities.
This Midwest City is Getting Something Right-So Don’t Miss It Original
It’s hard to put one’s finger on what exactly Cincinnati has done that others haven’t, but visiting this river city is a delight. It has become almost a fetish of late, visiting those once great American cities whose precipitous rise was followed by a slow demise, an attempt by modernity to kill them by a thousand cuts of highways, parking lots, globalism, and unfriendly buildings.
Maison Mère, a Cute New Paris Hotel for a Certain Type of Traveler
American visitors to Paris typically fall into one of two categories. Some go to sample French luxury and stay at the palace hotels, eat at multi-Michelin star restaurants, and shop on the Rue Saint-Honoré. The other stereotype, likely you if you’re reading this, is the American who wants to feel Parisian, or at least their cinematic vision of it. They stay in boutique hotels with single elevators and staff that range from nosy to insouciant. They shop at thrift stores and small boutiques.
An Iconic London Hotel Just Got a Much Needed Refresh
Refreshing an iconic hotel is one of the more dangerous games in travel. Chances are, those who loved it will hate it no matter what you do and the newcomers won’t appreciate the confines you worked within. It’s a challenge recently undertaken by Jacu Strauss, the creative director of Lore Group and the mind behind one of our favorite hotels in recent memory, the Lyle. This time, Strauss took on an icon of London cool, the old Ace Hotel.
Amalfi Coast Rolls Out New Car Ban
Its vertiginous single lane roads plagued summer after summer by traffic, the Amalfi Coast rolled out a new partial car ban on Wednesday. The region will be using an alternate number plate system, in this case meaning that only plates ending in an odd number can drive on odd number days and the opposite on even. The rules will affect the 22 miles between Vietri sul Mare and Positano. The new regulations will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends from mid-June through Sept.
Delta Puts Limit on Its Lounges, Telling Customers ‘We’re Not a WeWork’
If you’ve been one of millions of flyers who recently got a message from your airline to show up to the airport at least three hours early because of crowds, don’t expect to hang out in your Delta Airlines lounge. The airline recently rolled out a new policy for its lounges in which members are now only allowed lounge access within three hours of departure time. There are exceptions, however, for those with long layovers or flights that have been delayed.
Introducing Eat Sheet-Our New Destination Dining Guide
One of travel’s biggest joys—and trials—is figuring out where to eat when you’re on the road. There is nothing better than serendipitously scoring a great meal in an otherwise unprepossessing roadhouse. And nothing worse than following a guidebook’s advice on a four-star restaurant and getting burned. Is there anything more subjective than a restaurant review?
