There is significant heterogeneity in tumor-stroma proportions between patients, even within the same type of cancer. This biologic characteristic poses a challenge to achieving uniform efficacy of targeted therapeutics in many solid tumor types. This is especially true in pancreatic carcinomas, in which the stromal matrix is particularly dense as a result of desmoplastic reaction that takes places throughout the process of tumor formation35,36.
