Tolkien and the Power of Fantasy Recovering truth and wonder in a world of malignant myth.
Great stories run through Western literature from the start. One of its great and recurring topics is conflict, whether with other humans or internal spiritual conflict or both. Whether in the wars written of and in the Bible, or, to pick up the Greek and Roman strain, in such books as The Iliad and The Aeneid, such stories have brought us to face the nature of our own humanity and how to uplift it or fail to do so.

Glory to the Cantorate
Recently, a group of my colleagues performed a grand concert entitled “Glory to the Cantorate.” I had feelings about this title—many feelings. The first was religious opprobrium — surely glory is the Lord’s! But soon concern gave way to fascination. After all, there is something regal and almost medieval about the cantorate. As I have written previously, the cantor’s symbolic leadership and priestly vocation is analogous to aspects of the British monarchy.
With God on Our Side: Netanyahu, Trump, and Putin
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct 23 (IPS) - Bronisław Malinowski (1884 – 1942) did for several years conduct socio-anthropological research in the Trobriand Islands. Returning to England after World War I, he wrote several ground breaking books, among them Magic, Science, and Religion in which he assumed that people's feelings and motives are crucial for understanding the way their society functions.
Hope - Boulder Jewish News
Hope hangs in the air, it's a big, blue helium balloon rising up to the home of God. Hope is such a precious thing, often mistaken to be only in lofty prayers, but now, it is in the political realms, way up in to the utopian ionosphere where dreams are born. Now there are wishful visions that make us sniff that new car smell, feeling like a newborn babe Even love has crept back out of the mucky swamp that lies in our country's capital.
With God on their side
In a recent interview, Kate Forbes spoke of the frustration that she experiences as a politician of faith. She described how some of her erstwhile supporters abandoned her during her SNP leadership bid in March, when she went on the record with her beliefs. Forbes is a member of the Free Church of Scotland – the ‘Wee Frees’ – and is opposed to abortion, premarital sex and same-sex marriage. She believes politicians of faith are discriminated against in Britain’s political culture.
The Bombshell in the July Jobs Report
Last Friday, August 5, US Jobs Report for July 2022 surprised even mainstream economists who had forecast a 250,000 increase in jobs created in the official US Labor Department monthly jobs report for the period ending mid-July. The numbers came in at 528,000 in the CES, large corporations survey for the month.
What About “What-Aboutism”?
It has become fairly common in recent years for certain kinds of objections to the West’s hostility to Russia and its actions in Ukraine, and elsewhere, to be dismissed as “whataboutism.” So, for example, in response to the description of the Russian invasion of Ukraine as unprovoked and brutal, and therefore of Russia as inherently evil, one might say something like, “but what about the American and British unprovoked and brutal invasion of Iraq?” It is the latter comment that is then...
With God on Our Side?
On Sunday, August 7th—the day that Jews around the world celebrated Tisha bAv, the traditional day of mourning for the disasters that have occurred throughout Jewish history—the state of Israel brutally slaughtered at least 44 people, including 15 children in the besieged Gaza Strip. Beyond the horrible irony of this massacre, it is difficult for me not to see it as part of a much larger global Holy War. Not in the sense of the Crusades of history or American and European fears of Islamic Jihad.

Holmen Overcomes Challenges To Become Power of Positivity in Galveston County
By Ruth Ann Ruiz The Post Newspaper Features Editor Ask David Holmen what he thinks is one of the contributors to inner city domestic dysfunction and he’ll tell you it’s war. His granddaddy was in World War II and his father served in Vietnam. His own son is currently serving in the United States Navy as a chief petty officer. “After the veterans come home from wars, the ones who were on the front lines end up abusing alcohol and that just gets passed on to the next generation,” explained Holmen.

WITH GOD, THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE
Who or what is your hope in? Psalm 39:7 reminds us to wait on God because our hope is in Him. Hope is expecting grace when things look hopeless and recognizing you need help because you can’t do it by yourself. Pastor Tony Evans says, “Hope is joyful expectation about the future.” God made a promise to Abram, who was 75 at the time, that he would be a father of many nations. At the time Abram had no children. Later God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, meaning father of a multitude.

Brenda and the Bible: With the Heart, One Believes
By Brenda Groves The Post Newspaper Contributing Writer The word “obedience” never sat well with me in my youth. It always brought images of submission, like dog training: “Sit.” “Beg.” “Fetch.” But just recently I have learned that the word “disobedience” in the Greek language translates as “unbelief.” And there are many scriptures equating unbelief to disobedience. “So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.” Heb.
How a Fire Pit Revolutionized My Coaching Strategy
No matter how many groups you have, what group model you use, or what part of the world you are in, one thing is true in all of our ministries: group leaders need coaching! Throughout my time hanging around the Small Group Network in our local huddle and at the Lobby Gathering, I’ve noticed that saying the word “coaching” in a room of groups point people gets a pretty wide range of reactions… from excitement to exasperation and everywhere in between! Luckily, this is not a wildly profound...
