July 15, 2026 It is best to see the Declaration as one part of a larger story, not as an all-purpose tool. Wilfred McClay is a uniter, not a divider. And that is often a good thing. But not always. Sometimes, high-flown rhetoric erases more than it adds. Rather than bringing together all rational persons, it may destroy any grounds for reasonable debate, let alone recovery of important truths, especially those truths bound up in custom, tradition, and the real meaning of our common experience.
