1 Introduction Genetic and environmental factors play a role in the pathogenesis of immune-related chronic kidney diseases (CKD), such as immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy (IgAN) (1, 2), anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) (3, 4), and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (5, 6). Gastrointestinal symptoms are rare in the early stages of these diseases, although mild diarrhea occurs in patients with IgAN (7).

Both a leaky gut (a barrier defect of the intestinal surface) and gut dysbiosis (a change in the intestinal microbial population) are intrinsic to sepsis. While sepsis itself can cause dysbiosis, dysbiosis can worsen sepsis. The leaky gut syndrome refers to a status with which there is an increased intestinal permeability allowing the translocation of microbial molecules from the gut into the blood circulation.
