Introduction In vertebrates, photoreceptors are specialized neurons located in the outermost retinal layer and are responsible for the detection of light and its conversion into electrical signals, processes known as photoreception and phototransduction. There are two types of photoreceptor cells: rods and cones. Rod photoreceptors are responsible for dim light vision, while cone photoreceptors are involved in visual acuity and color perception.
