What the first report cards tell us about Ofsted’s new approach to inspection - SecEd
Ofsted’s inspection framework was launched in September, with inspections beginning in November.
Lead regulation comes shooting back: dynamic (dis)alignment
Regulation is complex and it takes very little for two jurisdictions working on the same topic to come to slightly (if not very) different solutions. So how and why does this matter in light of renewed interest in dynamic alignment on both sides of the Channel? In this blog we explain that it matters a lot, especially for those groups and organizations that are directly involved. We illustrate our argument by revisiting the story of lead shot in wetlands.
How green do you want your UK-EU ‘reset’ to be?
The UK-EU reset talks on 19th May 2025 aim to review areas where closer co-operation can be pursued. Such talks were unthinkable even a year ago as the then Tory Government continued to distance the UK from Brussels to demonstrate that ‘Brexit was done’. This ideological conviction shaped the approach to cooperation with the EU and led to decisions that were opposed by business, that increased bureaucracy and that made future alignment more challenging.
Any Sugar with That? Assessment of Dissolved Sucrose as Supplementary Feed in Nursery Rearing of Juvenile Bivalves
1. Introduction Over the past two decades, the global production of marine bivalves by volume has grown annually by 3.5%, with mussel aquaculture production tripling over the same period [1,2]. 'The time is ripe for change': How to strengthen the UK’s energy resilience and security
Technological advances in the past 200 years have relied on a plentiful supply of cheap energy, something we can no longer depend on. Energy resilience requires an integrated and joined-up cross-departmental strategy Recent energy supply shortages and high prices have highlighted the importance of energy resilience. Take natural gas. Gas prices throughout Europe have been unprecedentedly high since mid-2021.
Why local governance is important on the path to net zero
The energy secretary, Claire Coutinho, recently celebrated official statistics that showed the UK is the "first country in the G20 to halve its carbon emissions". Her remarks came amid a flurry of criticism directed at both the government – for changes to policies intended to reduce emissions – and to the opposition for the scaling back of its pledges around green investment. All of this against a backdrop of alarming climate trends: 2023 marked the hottest year on record.
Climate change: did COP 26 ‘keep 1.5 degrees alive’?
When Alok Sharma finally gavelled COP26 to a close, he wrapped up two weeks of intense international diplomacy on climate change, and also completed the first phase of the UK’s Presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP). The aim of COP26 was to keep ‘1.5 degrees alive’ – that is, to ensure the world remains committed to preventing global heating from exceeding more than 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. So, what is the Presidency of the COP? How well did the UK runs its presidency?
Environmental Regulation in the Post-Brexit Era
Picture courtesy of Kevinsphotos|Pixabay When it finally departed the EU on 31 December 2020, the UK government took back control over regulation across every area of public policy that had been previously delegated to EU institutions and agencies. Leading up to its departure, the nature of these regulatory arrangements had generated fierce debate about the extent to which the UK would choose to retain existing EU policy or whether it would diverge from them.
Does the Withdrawal Agreement pass the green Brexit test? - UK in a changing Europe
Does the Withdrawal Agreement pass the green Brexit test? The Withdrawal Agreement aims to establish the terms of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, including its extensive corpus of environmental laws and policies. The draft published on 14 November is divided into a number of parts, none of which deals exclusively with the environment. References are instead sprinkled finely throughout the entirety of the 585 pages.
Mosaic451 | Disadvantages Of PenTests For Cybersecurity | Security News
PenTesting, also known as “ethical hacking” or “white-hat hacking,” has always been viewed as the “sexy” side of cybersecurity, a task that is far more exciting than monitoring systems for intrusions, shoring up defenses, or performing compliance audits. Numerous security conferences are devoted to the fine art of attempting to hack into systems – with an owner’s full knowledge and permission – and reporting on the results.

We're talking about scrolls and cards, and about apps like Pocket that give you a choice between scrolling and going page-by-page. They also let you choose text size, color, spacing—all sorts of stuff! But I have a problem with this: I believe deeply in the power of composed text, text that "knows" where it falls on the page, how it's appearing—text that, in fact, resists the flexibility that these read-it-later apps afford! Should I just give up & go with the flow?

Let's put ourselves 20 years into the future. Without arguing too much about specifics, I think we can all agree that we will have computers that are much more advanced and complex than they are now. In addition they will be a much larger part of our daily lives. What are the dangers/ implications/ awesome things that will result from our reliance and use of technology that we don't understand?
