1 Introduction Alcohol dependence (AD) is a pattern of alcohol use that causes clinically significant impairment or distress [1], characterized by compulsive drinking and a loss of control over alcohol consumption [2]. AD is a major global public health issue, with one in eight adults in the United States reporting high-risk drinking behaviours in the past year and a high lifetime prevalence of AD. In the United Kingdom, the prevalence of heavy drinking and AD is also notably high [3].
