Halogen-controlled engineering of fluorescent carbon dots with adjustable color for food freshness detection
Food quality and safety are intimately linked to public health outcomes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the consumption of unsafe food can result in over 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhea to cancer. Food spoilage is particularly concerning as it causes millions of illnesses and hundreds of thousands of deaths each year [1]. Putrescine, a biogenic amine (BA), is an important indicator of spoilage.
Revisiting the role of algal biocathodes in microbial fuel cells for bioremediation and value-addition
Section snippets Relevance of cathodic compartment in MFC The cathodic reduction reaction plays an important role in the MFC performance. In conventional MFCs, the abiotic cathode reduces the electrons generated from the anode with the help of oxygen, the terminal electron acceptor (TEA). However, the oxygen reduction rate at cathode is dependent on the electrode material and electron mediators involved in the reduction [19].
Carbon source regulation of microalgal-fungal system for the resource recovery of wastewater: A review
Section snippets MFS structure and interaction Microalgae can form co-cultivation systems with other microorganisms such as microalgae, bacteria, activated sludge, filamentous fungi and yeast, offering additional benefits in the remediation process [8], [9], [11], [12], [25]. Table 1 provides an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of microalgae-based co-cultivation systems involving different microorganisms.

Finite-difference time-domain methods - Nature Reviews Methods Primers
Abstract The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is a widespread numerical tool for full-wave analysis of electromagnetic fields in complex media and for detailed geometries. Applications of the FDTD method cover a range of time and spatial scales, extending from subatomic to galactic lengths and from classical to quantum physics.
Critical review on production, characterization and applications of microalgal hydrochar: Insights on circular bioeconomy through hydrothermal carbonization
Microalgae are an attractive source of renewable products that gained attention not only in the industrial sector but also in agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors for production of high value nutraceutical products [1].

Record Purcell factors in ultracompact hybrid plasmonic ring resonators
Abstract For integrated optical devices and traveling-wave resonators, realistic use of the superior wave-matter interaction offered by plasmonics is impeded by ohmic loss, which increases rapidly with mode volume reduction. In this work, we report composite hybrid plasmonic waveguides (CHPWs) that are not only capable of guiding subwavelength optical mode with long-range propagation but also unrestricted by stringent requirements in structural, material, or modal symmetry.

A Comprehensive Statistical Framework for Determination of Commutability, Accuracy, and Agreement in Clinical DNAemia Assays
Virology L. Tang, Y. Su, Z. Gu, A. M. Caliendo, S. Pounds, R. T. Hayden Michael J. Loeffelholz, Editor DOI: 10.1128/JCM.00963-18 ABSTRACT Despite advances in the standardization of quantitative DNAemia tests and efforts to better understand and characterize the performance of reference materials in different assays, it remains unclear how the commutability performance of reference materials is related to intra- and interassay agreement.

Cost-effectiveness of osteoporosis screening strategies for hip fracture prevention in older Chinese people: a decision tree modeling study in the Mr. OS and Ms. OS cohort in Hong Kong
Despite the high costs of hip fracture, many governments provide limited support for osteoporosis screening. We demonstrated that osteoporosis screening by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) with or without pre-screening by Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) or calcaneal ultrasound are more cost-effective than no screening in Chinese people aged 65 or over in Hong Kong.
Ultrathin graphene-based membrane with precise molecular sieving and ultrafast solvent permeation
Graphene oxide (GO) membranes continue to attract intense interest due to their unique molecular sieving properties combined with fast permeation1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. However, their use is limited to aqueous solutions because GO membranes appear impermeable to organic solvents1, a phenomenon not yet fully understood. Here, we report efficient and fast filtration of organic solutions through GO laminates containing smooth two-dimensional (2D) capillaries made from large (10–20??m) flakes.
KIT Mutations and CD117 Overexpression Are Markers of Better Progression-Free Survival in Vulvar Melanomas
Few studies have addressed prognostic markers and none has correlated molecular status and prognosis in vulvar melanomas. We evaluated the clinicopathologic features of 95 cases. p53, CD117, Ki-67, neurofibromin, brafv600e, and nrasq61r immunostains; and molecular analyses by either targeted next generation or direct sequencing were performed on available archival materials. Molecular testing detected mutations in KIT (44%), BRAF (25%), NF1 (22%), TP53 (17%), NRAS (9%), and TERT promoter (9%).
Icariin promotes mouse hair follicle growth by increasing insulin-like growth factor 1 expression in dermal papillary cells
In vitro, the effect of icariin on hair growth was assessed by using a vibrissae hair follicle (VHF) organ-culture model. The proliferation of hair matrix keratinocytes and the expression of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 in follicles were examined by double immunostaining for 5-bromo-2?-deoxyuridine and IGF-1, in the presence or absence of icariin. Dermal papilla cells (DPCs) were cultured and IGF-1 level was measured by reverse transcription-PCR and ELISA after icariin treatment.
Lateral closing isosceles triangular osteotomy for the treatment of a post-traumatic cubitus varus deformity in children
Aims Cubitus varus is the most common late complication of a supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children. Correction can be performed using one of a number of techniques of osteotomy but each has disadvantages. We describe a new technique for correcting post-traumatic cubitus varus using a lateral closing wedge isosceles triangular osteotomy.
Calpain-activated mTORC2/Akt pathway mediates airway smooth muscle remodelling in asthma
Allergic asthma is characterized by inflammation and airway remodelling. Airway remodelling with excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) and larger smooth muscle mass are correlated with increased airway responsiveness and asthma severity. Calpain is a family of calcium-dependent endopeptidases, which plays an important role in ECM remodelling. However, the role of calpain in airway smooth muscle remodelling remains unknown.
