Melanoma overdiagnosis is an issue of great concern and controversy among dermatologists.1 Overdiagnosis of cancer refers to the detection of an abnormal growth that, although histologically consistent with cancer, would never cause symptoms or shorten the patient’s life.2 Unlike locally advanced melanoma, melanoma in situ (MIS) poses virtually no risk of mortality. However, even a diagnosis of MIS can have profound emotional consequences.
