1 Introduction Creatine (CR) is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that serves as an energy buffer primarily participating in the ATP cycle by forming phosphocreatine (PCr) in response to creatine kinase (CK). When ATP supply is insufficient, PCr is reconverted to ATP by transferring phosphate groups to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) via CK (Wyss and Wallimann 1992).
