We assessed this association in a Chinese population, and pooled our results with those from two prior studies.
Sex-specific association between fibroblast growth factor 21 and type 2 diabetes: a nested case-control study in Singapore Chinese men and women
In this Chinese population in Singapore, we found a strong dose-dependent association between higher serum FGF-21 levels and increased risk of incident type 2 diabetes in women but not in men, and the association was independent of liver enzymes and other diabetes risk factors. In addition, FGF-21 improved diabetes risk reclassification among women. The positive association between FGF-21 and incident type 2 diabetes found in the current study is in accordance with previous studies [6–8].
