Abstract Caffeine is a natural compound that inhibits the major cellular signaling regulator TOR, leading to widespread effects including growth inhibition. S. cerevisiae yeast can adapt to tolerate high concentrations of caffeine in coffee and cacao fermentations and in experimental systems.
