1 Introduction Exposure to traumatic events often leads to posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and may trigger self-medication behaviours. The self-medication hypothesis (Khantzian 1997) posits that individuals experiencing psychological distress use substances such as alcohol to alleviate negative emotions.
