1 INTRODUCTION Migration is one of the main adaptations of animals to seasonal changes in climate and resources (Dingle, 2014; Newton, 2010). This periodic movement between distinct places is enabled by a suite of morphological, sensory and physiologically adaptive traits (Piersma et al., 2005). While the ontogenetic perspective is one of the four key aspects that Tinbergen (1963) raised in the study of animal behaviour, the ontogeny of migration remains understudied.
