Abstract Background and aims Secondary spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) prophylaxis has been shown to reduce mortality. Recent evidence, however, suggests that SBP prophylaxis may lead to adverse outcomes such as antibiotic-resistant infections and increased SBP recurrence. Among patients with SBP, we evaluated the proportion who received SBP prophylaxis and its impact on readmission with SBP, readmission with other infections and mortality.

1 Background Liver cirrhosis is the end-stage of many chronic liver diseases and accounts for 2.4% of global deaths [1]. Cirrhosis is typically characterised into two states, compensated and decompensated cirrhosis; the latter usually defined by occurrence of ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, or variceal bleeding. The most common causes of cirrhosis in the Western countries, including Sweden, have been alcohol-related liver disease and hepatitis C [2, 3].

The recent shift toward the nomenclature of steatotic liver diseases (SLD) marks an important step in clarifying the overlap between metabolic and alcohol-related liver conditions [1]. Within this framework, MetALD has been introduced as an intermediary between ALD and MASLD. However, there is limited scientific understanding of the long-term risks for this subgroup of patients.
